D URING the past ten years there has been a phenomenal growth in the use of Shewhart control charts in improving the quality of industrial products. Likewise, manufacturers have greatly increased their use of standard sampling plans in the inspection of purchased materials. In view of the wide areas of application still untouched, these trends seem likely to continue. An appraisal of the future for statistics in production and inspection focuses attention on three worthy questions: 1) What contribution can the statistician make to greater and more effective utilization of present statistical methods in industry? 2y What part can the statistician play in developing new statistical methods and in making them readily available? 3) How can the quality control engineer get the maximum benefit from the work of the statistician? To suggest tentative answers to these three interlocking questions is the object of the present paper.
