I introduce a model of undirected dyadic link formation which allows for assortative matching on observed agent characteristics (homophily) as well as unrestricted agent‐level heterogeneity in link surplus (degree heterogeneity). Like in fixed effects panel data analyses, the joint distribution of observed and unobserved agent‐level characteristics is left unrestricted. Two estimators for the (common) homophily parameter, β0, are developed and their properties studied under an asymptotic sequence involving a single network growing large. The first, tetrad logit (TL), estimator conditions on a sufficient statistic for the degree heterogeneity. The second, joint maximum likelihood (JML), estimator treats the degree heterogeneity {Ai0}i = 1-super-N as additional (incidental) parameters to be estimated. The TL estimate is consistent under both sparse and dense graph sequences, whereas consistency of the JML estimate is shown only under dense graph sequences.

We propose a family of control variate estimators for variance reduction in design-based survey sampling and causal inference, with and without interference. In these settings, inverse probability weighting (IPW) estimators are widely used, but may have large variance when sampling, treatment, or exposure probabilities are small. Building on the observation that several common estimators, including the Hajek estimator, the normalized estimator, the augmented inverse…
网络模型中基于成对差分的分布回归方法
I develop an estimation and inference framework for distribution regression in dyadic network settings with two-way fixed effects that vary across thresholds of the outcome. I show that identification of the structural parameters is achieved through binarization of the outcome at each threshold, and estimate the model by conditional maximum likelihood, which "differences out" the fixed effects and circumvents the incidental parameter problem. The estimator remains…

We propose the Polyads estimator, a new method to estimate structural parameters in weighted multi-way networks while controlling for rich, arbitrary structures of fixed effects. The method is based on a series of classification tasks and is agnostic to both the number and structure of fixed effects. Unlike full maximum likelihood, our estimator does not suffer from the incidental parameter problem: it is consistent and satisfies a Central Limit Theorem with no asymptotic…
度异质性双边网络形成模型的惩罚似然估计
Estimating network formation models with degree heterogeneity raises two problems in empirical networks. First, agents that send no links, receive no links, or link to all remaining agents can make the fixed-effects MLE fail to exist. Trimming these agents changes the estimation sample and induces selection bias. Second, the incidental-parameter problem biases common parameters and average partial effects. We resolve both issues through a penalized likelihood approach. Our…
网络辅助的高维因子模型估计
This article takes advantage of group-level heterogeneity and network cohesion phenomenon to improve the estimation accuracy of approximate factor models. As large heterogeneous panels become available, a grouped pattern of unobserved heterogeneity in the panel data is highlighted. Clustering of factor loadings provides a solution to model group-level heterogeneity. Moreover, networks are frequently observed in economics and finance, which capture the interconnectivity…
真正非平衡动态网络面板模型的准最大似然估计
This paper develops a quasi-maximum likelihood estimator for genuinely unbalanced dynamic network panel data models with individual fixed effects. We propose a model that accommodates contemporaneous and lagged network spillovers, temporal dependence, and a listing effect that activates upon a unit's first appearance in the panel. We establish the consistency of the QMLE as both $N$ and $T$ go to infinity, derive its asymptotic distribution, and identify an asymptotic bias…
