The identification of reproducible signals from the results of replicate high-throughput experiments is an important part of modern biological research. Often little is known about the dependence structure and the marginal distribution of the data, motivating the development of a nonparametric approach to assess reproducibility. The procedure, which we call the maximum rank reproducibility (MaRR) procedure, uses a maximum rank statistic to parse reproducible signals from noise without making assumptions about the distribution of reproducible signals. Because it uses the rank scale this procedure can be easily applied to a variety of data types. One application is to assess the reproducibility of RNA-seq technology using data produced by the sequencing quality control (SEQC) consortium, which coordinated a multi-laboratory effort to assess reproducibility across three RNA-seq platforms. Our results on simulations and SEQC data show that the MaRR procedure effectively controls false discovery rates, has desirable power properties, and compares well to existing methods. We study inference for continuous linear functionals of solutions to ill-posed inverse problems, including Euclidean parameters arising in nonparametric instrumental variables, proximal causal inference, and shadow-variable models. Although pointwise root-$n$ inference is possible under standard conditions, we show that this need not translate into locally reliable inference. Under a model imposing only minimal regularity conditions, the target is Hellinger discontinuous…

We first provide inference on the quantile function of the bid distribution in firstprice or descending auctions, and the quantile function of the value distribution in second-price or ascending auctions, with a known number of bidders with symmetric independent private values. Specifically, we provide finite-sample, nonparametric, tuning parameter-free, uniform confidence bands for these quantile functions when observing only the transaction price. We also show how these…

State-dependent local projections (LPs) are widely used to study how causal effects vary as a function of economic states, but shock exogeneity alone does not identify this response function. We show that identification follows when the underlying conditional mean is linear in the shock with a state-dependent coefficient, a condition satisfied in canonical micro-macro environments, including first-order perturbation solutions of heterogeneous-agent and macro-finance models.…

This paper develops a flexible distribution-free method for collective outlier detection and enumeration, designed for situations in which the presence of outliers can be detected powerfully even though their precise identification may be challenging due to the sparsity, weakness, or elusiveness of their signals. This method builds upon recent developments in conformal inference and integrates classical ideas from other areas, including multiple testing, locally most…

This paper studies the nonparametric identification and estimation of additively separable triangular models with continuous endogenous and instrumental variables, allowing for a nonseparable first-stage equation. Under the independence of instrumental variables and unobservables, we show that the outcome function possesses a closed-form expression as a functional of conditional cumulative distribution functions. The resulting plug-in estimators require no regularization and…

We give an order-explicit large deviation bound for the difference between a high-dimensional $U$-statistic and its Hájek projection. In particular, we show that any $U$-statistic of order $b$ on $n$ observations, with a $d$-dimensional kernel whose coordinates have $ψ_1$-Orlicz norm at most $φ$, has a maximum deviation from its Hájek projection of order $O_p(φb n^{-1}\log^2(dn))$. The proof relies on the development of novel order-explicit moment inequalities for…
