Shrinkage methods are frequently used to improve the precision of least squares estimators of fixed effects. However, widely used shrinkage estimators guarantee improved precision only under strong distributional assumptions. I develop an estimator for the fixed effects that obtains the best possible mean squared error within a class of shrinkage estimators. This class includes conventional shrinkage estimators and the optimality does not require distributional assumptions. The estimator has an intuitive form and is easy to implement. Moreover, the fixed effects are allowed to vary with time and to be serially correlated, in which case the shrinkage optimally incorporates the underlying correlation structure. I also provide a method to forecast fixed effects one period ahead in this setting.
This paper presents a causal decision framework for list-price elasticities in intermediated retail channels, where estimates are confounded by promotions, competitor moves and shopkeeper pass-through. Rather than forcing a number when the evidence is ambiguous, the system treats abstention (Wait) as an active diagnostic output. Built on Double Machine Learning and conformal prediction, it evaluates whether conditions exist to act on a recommended price or whether…
非线性政治面板中的预测必要性与因果发现:民主化的反馈和动态
A non-significant coefficient in a dynamic panel model need not imply the absence of a relationship. It may instead reflect heterogeneous effects averaged toward zero, reciprocal dynamics overlooked by a recursive specification, or relationships masked by the omission of correlated covariates. Standard linear estimators cannot distinguish among these possibilities. We develop an inferential workflow for political panel data that resolves this ambiguity by combining flexible…
面板MIDAS模型非线性最小二乘估计量的渐近分布
The Mixed Data Sampling (MIDAS) approach provides a flexible framework for incorporating mixed-frequency data into econometric models. In this paper, we introduce the MIDAS framework into a panel data model and derive the asymptotic properties of the NLS estimator under a joint asymptotic framework where both N and T tend to infinity, allowing for heteroskedasticity and arbitrary correlation within each individual. To facilitate valid inference, we construct robust…

We develop a Dynamic Spatial Panel Bayesian Additive Regression Trees model with Horseshoe shrinkage (DSP-BART-HS) for high-dimensional spatio-temporal panel data. We jointly evaluate the model against a comprehensive suite of structural spatial econometrics, non-parametric machine learning methods, and small-area estimators across nine data-generating scenarios spanning 200 replicates each, including irregular spatial topologies, dense policy effects, and non-linear…
从控制到处理:超越已观测面板的因果预测
Conventional panel data methods recover retrospective counterfactuals within the observed horizon. Many policy decisions, however, are prospective: how would an untreated unit evolve beyond the observed panel under an intervention it has not previously experienced? We develop a causal forecasting framework that combines the counterfactual logic of synthetic controls with multivariate time-series extrapolation. Under a latent factor model, we impose low-rank structure on the…
因子增强的机器学习面板回归
This paper develops the asymptotic theory for high-dimensional panel data regressions in settings with cross-sectionally dependent errors driven by common shocks. We consider a factor-augmented sparse-group LASSO estimator that combines MIDAS aggregation with latent factors. The estimator can take advantage of the mixed-frequency group structure in the time-series dimension. Theory shows that it can outperform the standard LASSO estimator both for prediction and estimation…
