SUMMARY The Cramér-von Mises class of test statistics for the one-sample goodness-of-fit problem is based on the weighted L2-distance of the distribution from its empirical counterpart. It is well known that the root π standardized norm has a degenerate limiting distribution under the null hypothesis, and the π standardized norm has a nondegenerate limiting distribution that is not normal and depends on identifying the principal components for every weight function. Usually this limiting distribution is an infinite weighted sum of Chi-squared distributions. In the current investigation, we offer an alternative estimate of the L2-norm that is asymptotically normal under both the null and the alternative distributions. Similar modification is indicated for the Watson (1961) statistic used for testing a distribution defined on a circle.

We propose a multilevel main effects matrix factor model (MMEFM) to extract meaningful row and column effects from groups of matrix data. As a generalization of a multilevel matrix factor model, we provide rigorous definitions of MMEFM and identifications, together with iterative algorithms for the estimators of all global and local components in the main effects and common component, including global/local main effects and core ranks, with rates of convergence spelt out. An…

We consider estimation of large approximate factor models in high-dimensional panels of stationary time series using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We review the key results establishing the necessary and sufficient conditions for consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimators, which hold when both the cross-sectional dimension $n$ and the sample size $T$ tend to infinity. Special emphasis is placed on identification. First, we show that the common and…

Many real-world policies and business interventions require assessing short-term effects to inform timely decisions, even though most causal inference methods focus on long-term average treatment effects. In this article, we introduce average treatment effect localization (ATEL), which captures localized, short-term policy impacts in panel data settings with a single treated unit and provides early indicators of policy impact. To accommodate both time-varying and nonlinear…

We study recursive-design wild bootstrap inference for dynamic panel data models with unobserved common factors estimated by Common Correlated Effects. In the large N,T setting, the bootstrap reproduces the biased limiting distribution in pure autoregressive models, but fails to capture all bias and factor-estimation variance components in models with additional regressors, particularly under weak exogeneity. We trace this failure to holding regressors fixed across bootstrap…

In high-dimensional factor pricing models, the power of regularized alpha tests depends on the ridge parameter, whose optimal value varies with the unknown direction of pricing errors. We address this tuning uncertainty by combining ridge-specific p-values using the Cauchy rule. The resulting test retains the least-squares alpha estimator and residual sample covariance and accommodates more assets than observations. We establish the joint Gaussian limits of the component…

Synthetic control relies on pre-treatment fit to balance the unobserved factors that drive untreated outcomes. The argument fails when an observed common shock, such as a commodity price, moves with the latent factors before treatment and departs from them afterwards and pre-treatment fit then says almost nothing about the synthetic unit's exposure to the shock. I derive a period-specific bound that links the post-treatment bias of any weighting estimator to pre-treatment…
