Summary A sequential procedure is developed to distinguish between null and alternative hypotheses of the type H 0: θ ≤ θ0 and H 1: θ ≥ θ1 (θ0 ≤ θ1) for one-parameter exponential families in such a way that the risks of type I and type II errors are smaller than some predetermined bounds. This is accomplished using observations of a sequence of random variables whose distribution is known up to the parameter θ, and involves the theory of certain tests with power one. The average sample number for this procedure is compared with that for Wald's sequential probability ratio test applied to the same problem.
