Several models have been developed to capture the dynamics of the conditional correlations between time series of financial returns and several studies have shown that the market volatility is a major determinant of the correlations. We extend some models to include explicitly the dependence of the correlations on the market volatility. The models differ by the way—linear or nonlinear, direct or indirect—in which the volatility influences the correlations. Using a wide set of models with two measures of market volatility on two datasets, we find that for some models, the empirical results support to some extent the statistical significance and the economic significance of the volatility effect on the correlations, but the presence of the volatility effect does not improve the forecasting performance of the extended models. Multi-step forecasting systems, including modern artificial intelligence (AI) models, often issue overlapping predictions for the same future time from different forecast origins. These predictions can disagree even when produced by the same model, a phenomenon we call cross-origin incoherence. We propose a Bayesian reconciliation framework that treats overlapping forecasts as noisy and potentially biased measurements of a common latent trajectory. The method operates as a…
We tackle the issue of producing point, sign, and density forecasts for the monthly real price of carbon in the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). We show that Bayesian Vector Autoregressive (BVAR) models augmented with factors based on macroeconomic and financial variables yield improvements in point and density forecasting performance, with the largest point-forecast gains emerging at intermediate and longer horizons. In particular, the one-factor BVAR model…

This paper develops a daily structural VAR for identifying oil price shocks from conditional heteroskedasticity and quantifies the transmission of their timevarying uncertainty. Identification exploits volatility clustering and spillovers in a structural GARCH specification and the complete identified set is derived. We derive covariance impulse response functions and introduce a time-varying forecast error variance decomposition (TV-FEVD) that allows for a decomposition of…

We introduce inference methods for score decompositions, which partition scoring functions for predictive assessment into three interpretable components: miscalibration, discrimination, and uncertainty. Our estimation and inference relies on a linear recalibration of the forecasts and is applicable to general point forecasts such as means and quantiles due to its validity for non-smooth scoring functions. This approach ensures non-negative decomposition terms in finite…

A multivariate fractional Brownian motion (mfBm) with component-wise Hurst exponents is used to model and forecast realized volatility (RV). We investigate the interplay between correlation coefficients and Hurst exponents and propose a novel method to estimate model parameters, establishing its consistency and asymptotic normality. Additionally, we develop a time-reversibility test, which is typically not rejected by RV data. When the data generating process is a…

This paper introduces a robust and computationally efficient estimation framework for high-dimensional volatility models in the BEKK-ARCH class. The proposed approach employs data truncation to ensure robustness against heavy-tailed distributions and utilizes a regularized least squares method for efficient optimization in high-dimensional settings. Non-asymptotic error bounds are established for the resulting estimators under heavy-tailed regimes, and the minimax optimal…
