Abstract How to measure and model volatility is an important issue in finance. Recent research uses high‐frequency intraday data to construct ex post measures of daily volatility. This paper uses a Bayesian model‐averaging approach to forecast realized volatility. Candidate models include autoregressive and heterogeneous autoregressive specifications based on the logarithm of realized volatility, realized power variation, realized bipower variation, a jump and an asymmetric term. Applied to equity and exchange rate volatility over several forecast horizons, Bayesian model averaging provides very competitive density forecasts and modest improvements in point forecasts compared to benchmark models. We discuss the reasons for this, including the importance of using realized power variation as a predictor. Bayesian model averaging provides further improvements to density forecasts when we move away from linear models and average over specifications that allow for GARCH effects in the innovations to log‐volatility. We construct a modeling framework that allows for the flexible contribution of intraday information to predict the conditional distribution of asset returns. A flexible spline specification is proposed to capture the contribution of intraday returns inside GARCH and stochastic volatility specifications for daily returns. The “focused Bayesian” prediction framework is adopted to allow the intraday contribution to the simpler GARCH specification to be trained according to the…

We present a new class of Bayesian dynamic models for bivariate price-realized volatility time series in financial forecasting. A novel dynamic gamma process model adopted for realized volatility is integrated with traditional Bayesian dynamic linear models (DLMs) for asset price series. This represents reduced-form volatility leverage and feedback effects through use of realized volatility proxies in conditional DLMs for prices or returns, coupled with the synthesis of…
动态状态空间 HAR 模型
The Heterogeneous AutoRegressive model for the logs of Realised Volatility (HARL) has established itself as the benchmark specification for modelling and forecasting return volatility, owing to its parsimony and ability to capture the strong persistence typically observed in RV. To address potential concerns such as measurement errors, nonlinearities, and non-spherical residuals, numerous variants of the baseline HARL model have been developed in the literature. This paper…

Accurate prediction of financial market volatility is critical for risk management, derivatives pricing, and investment strategy. In this study, we propose a multitude of regime-switching methods to improve the prediction of S&P 500 volatility by capturing structural changes in the market across time. We use eleven years of SPX data, from May 1st, 2014 to May 27th, 2025, to compute daily realized volatility (RV) from 5-minute intraday log returns, adjusted for irregular…
深度学习增强的 Realized GARCH 模型
We propose a new approach to volatility modeling by combining deep learning (LSTM) and realized volatility measures. This LSTM-enhanced realized GARCH framework incorporates and distills modeling advances from financial econometrics, high frequency trading data and deep learning. Bayesian inference via the Sequential Monte Carlo method is employed for statistical inference and forecasting. The new framework can jointly model the returns and realized volatility measures, has…

Summary Dynamic jumps in the price and volatility of an asset are modelled using a joint Hawkes process in conjunction with a bivariate jump diffusion. A state‐space representation is used to link observed returns, plus nonparametric measures of integrated volatility and price jumps, to the specified model components, with Bayesian inference conducted using a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. An evaluation of marginal likelihoods for the proposed model relative to a large…
