SUMMARY Detection of structural change is a critical empirical activity, but continuous ‘monitoring’ for changes in real time raises well‐known econometric issues that have been explored in a single series context. If multiple series co‐break then it is possible that simultaneous examination of a set of series helps identify changes with higher probability or more rapidly than when series are examined on a case‐by‐case basis. Some asymptotic theory is developed for maximum and average CUSUM detection tests. Monte Carlo experiments suggest that these both provide an improvement in detection relative to a univariate detector over a wide range of experimental parameters, given a sufficiently large number of co‐breaking series. This is robust to a cross‐sectional correlation in the errors (a factor structure) and heterogeneity in the break dates. We apply the test to a panel of UK price indices. We study estimation of the mean slope in heterogeneous panels that combine cross-sectional dependence from unobserved common factors with unit-specific structural breaks occurring at different dates. We organize the available second-generation Mean Group estimators into a regime map indexed by the cross-section size, the strength of the cross-sectional dependence, and the nature of the structural change, and we examine two estimators for the small-to-moderate-dependence…
宏观计量中多重变点检验:实证指南与近期进展
We review recent developments in detecting and estimating multiple change-points in time series models with exogenous and endogenous regressors, panel data models, and factor models. This review differs from others in multiple ways: (1) it focuses on inference about the change-points in slope parameters, rather than in the mean of the dependent variable - the latter being common in the statistical literature; (2) it focuses on detecting - via sequential testing and other…
结构不稳定下的面板数据协整检验
Spurious regression analysis in panel data when the time series are cross-section dependent is analyzed in the article. The set-up includes (possibly unknown) multiple structural breaks that can affect both the deterministic and the common factor components. We show that consistent estimation of the long-run average parameter is possible once cross-section dependence is controlled using cross-section averages in the spirit of Pesaran's common correlated effects approach. This…

Dealing with structural breaks is an important step in most, if not all, empirical economic research. This is particularly true in panel data comprised of many cross-sectional units, such as individuals, firms or countries, which are all affected by major events. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected most sectors of the global economy, and there is by now plenty of evidence to support this. The impact on stock markets is, however, still unclear. The fact that most markets seem…
因子成分与特异成分的经验过程
The distributions of the common and idiosyncratic components for an individual variable are important in forecasting and applications. However, they are not identified with low-dimensional observations. Using the recently developed theory for large dimensional approximate factor model for large panel data, the common and idiosyncratic components can be estimated consistently. Based on the estimated common and idiosyncratic components, we construct the empirical processes for…
含交互固定效应与多重结构突变的面板数据模型
In this article, we consider estimation of common structural breaks in panel data models with unobservable interactive fixed effects. We introduce a penalized principal component (PPC) estimation procedure with an adaptive group fused LASSO to detect the multiple structural breaks in the models. Under some mild conditions, we show that with probability approaching one the proposed method can correctly determine the unknown number of breaks and consistently estimate the…
