How should researchers conduct causal inference when the outcome of interest is latent and measured imperfectly by multiple indicators? We develop a general nonparametric framework for identifying and estimating average treatment effects on latent outcomes in randomized experiments. We show that latent-outcome estimation faces a fundamental but overlooked noncomparability problem due to measurement-set dependence: adding, removing, or replacing measurement targets a different transformation of the latent outcome and therefore a different causal estimand. We formalize the (non)comparability problem and show that common procedures in practice, including standardized averages, principal components analysis, and inverse covariance weighting, generally do not satisfy this condition. To address the problem, we propose a design-based approach built around nonparametric bridge functions. We characterize when such bridge functions exist and derive the corresponding estimator. In simulations with nonlinear measurement systems, our estimator sharply reduces measurement-system dependence relative to standard indices and exhibits good finite-sample performance. We illustrate the method with an application to the Hajj visa lottery. Our framework provides practical guidance for measurement design, identification, and efficient causal estimation with latent outcomes.

Many real-world policies and business interventions require assessing short-term effects to inform timely decisions, even though most causal inference methods focus on long-term average treatment effects. In this article, we introduce average treatment effect localization (ATEL), which captures localized, short-term policy impacts in panel data settings with a single treated unit and provides early indicators of policy impact. To accommodate both time-varying and nonlinear…
连接局部与总体因果效应:近端工具变量方法
Instrumental variable (IV) methods address treatment endogeneity, but with non-compliance and heterogeneous treatment effects a binary instrument generally identifies the local average treatment effect (LATE) among compliers rather than the population average treatment effect (ATE). When treatment effects and compliance probabilities are heterogeneous and dependent through latent factors, the ATE need not be identified by IV variation alone. We develop a proximal…
动态选择下的因果推断:时变协变量与潜在异质性
I study dynamic treatment effects in panel data under staggered adoption when treatment timing depends jointly on unobserved time-invariant heterogeneity and time-varying pretreatment covariates, including lagged outcomes. Untreated potential outcomes follow a nonparametric dynamic panel model that allows flexible interactions between time-varying covariates and latent heterogeneity. I use pretreatment outcome histories to find individuals with similar time-invariant latent…

通过反事实归因分摊两个风险因素的因果责任
Unlike traditional causal inference, which prospectively evaluates the effects of causes, apportioning causal responsibility requires a retrospective assessment to deduce the causes of an outcome that has already occurred. This paper proposes a quantitative framework for apportioning causal responsibility between two binary risk factors that jointly contribute to a realized adverse outcome. Ideally, knowing the individual's latent causal type, defined by the potential…

Diet plays a crucial role in health, and understanding the causal effects of dietary patterns is essential for informing public health policy and personalized nutrition strategies. However, causal inference in nutritional epidemiology faces several challenges: (i) high-dimensional and correlated food/nutrient intake data induce massive treatment levels; (ii) nutritional studies are interested in latent dietary patterns rather than single food items; and (iii) the goal is to…
