In environmental science applications, extreme events frequently exhibit a complex spatio-temporal structure, which is difficult to describe flexibly and estimate in a computationally efficient way using state-of-art parametric extreme-value models. In this paper, we propose a computationally-cheap non-parametric approach to investigate the probability distribution of temporal clusters of spatial extremes, and study within-cluster patterns with respect to various characteristics. These include risk functionals describing the overall event magnitude, spatial risk measures such as the size of the affected area, and measures representing the location of the extreme event. Under the framework of functional regular variation, we verify the existence of the corresponding limit distributions as the considered events become increasingly extreme. Furthermore, we develop non-parametric estimators for the limiting expressions of interest and show their asymptotic normality under appropriate mixing conditions. Uncertainty is assessed using a (provably consistent) multiplier block bootstrap procedure. The finite-sample behavior of our estimators and the bootstrap scheme is demonstrated in a spatio-temporal simulated example. Our methodology is then applied to study the spatio-temporal dependence structure of high-dimensional sea surface temperature data for the southern Red Sea. Our analysis reveals new insights into the temporal persistence, and the complex hydrodynamic patterns of extreme sea temperature events in this region.

Neural survival models are increasingly asked to support counterfactual claims---how much a treatment would change survival in a population---rather than only prognostic risk scores. Answering such questions from observational data requires valid inference for treatment-specific survival contrasts under confounding and covariate-dependent censoring, targets for which standard deep survival estimators are biased and provide no honest uncertainty. We propose Targeted Deep…

This article presents a flexible quantile spatially varying coefficient model (QSVCM) for the regression analysis of spatial data. The proposed model enables researchers to assess the dependence of conditional quantiles of the response variable on covariates while accounting for spatial nonstationarity. Our approach facilitates learning and interpreting heterogeneity in spatial data distributed over complex or irregular domains. We introduce a quantile regression method that…

This paper proposes a flexible framework for inferring large-scale time-varying and time-lagged correlation networks from multivariate or high-dimensional non-stationary time series with piecewise smooth trends. Built on a novel and unified multiple-testing procedure of time-lagged cross-correlation functions with a fixed or diverging number of lags, our method can accurately disclose flexible time-varying network structures associated with complex functional structures at…

Heterogeneous treatment effects (HTE) based on patients' genetic or clinical factors are of significant interest to precision medicine. Simultaneously modeling HTE and corresponding main effects for randomized clinical trials with high-dimensional predictive markers is challenging. Motivated by the modified covariates approach, we propose a two-stage statistical learning procedure for estimating HTE with optimal efficiency augmentation, generalizing to arbitrary interaction…

We reconcile the two worlds of dense and sparse modeling by exploiting the positive aspects of both. We employ a factor model and assume {the dynamic of the factors is non-pervasive while} the idiosyncratic term follows a sparse vector autoregressive model (VAR) {which allows} for cross-sectional and time dependence. The estimation is articulated in two steps: first, the factors and their loadings are estimated via principal component analysis and second, the sparse VAR is…

This article provides a new methodology for estimating the term structure of corporate debt using a semiparametric penalized spline model. The method is applied to a case study of AT&T bonds. Typically, very few data are available on individual corporate bond prices, too little to find a nonparametric estimate of term structure from these bonds alone. This problem is solved by “borrowing strength” from Treasury bond data. More specifically, we combine a nonparametric model…
