Summary Community detection is a crucial task in network analysis that can be significantly improved by incorporating subject-level information, ie, covariates. Existing methods have shown the effectiveness of using covariates on the low-degree nodes, but rarely discuss the case where communities have significantly different density levels, ie, multiscale networks. In this paper, we introduce a novel method that addresses this challenge by constructing network-adjusted covariates, which leverage the network connections and covariates with a node-specific weight for each node. This weight can be calculated without tuning parameters. We present novel theoretical results on the strong consistency of our method under degree-corrected stochastic blockmodels with covariates, even in the presence of misspecification and multiple sparse communities. Additionally, we establish a general lower bound for the community detection problem when both the network and covariates are present, and it shows that our method is optimal for connection intensity up to a constant factor. Our method outperforms existing approaches in simulations and a LastFM app user network. We then compare our method with others on a statistics publication citation network where 30% of nodes are isolated, and our method produces reasonable and balanced results. Our method is implemented in the R package NAC.

Real-world public health policies are often enacted by local jurisdictions, but their effects can ripple through connected populations. For causal evaluation, this creates a difficult spatiotemporal problem: intermittent policy updates create path-level treatments, and because spillover depends on neighboring treatment paths along with the focal-unit's own history, controlling time-varying confounding requires high-dimensional, multimodal information from both sources. To…

We consider experimentation in the presence of non-stationarity, inter-unit (spatial) interference, and carry-over effects (temporal interference), where we wish to estimate the global average treatment effect (GATE), the difference between average outcomes having exposed all units at all times to treatment or to control. We suppose spatial interference is described by a graph, where a unit's outcome depends on its neighborhood's treatments, and that temporal interference is…
Predict-then-optimize methods learn a mapping from features to unknown edge costs. They then solve the shortest-path problem on the predicted costs. We study a feature-free alternative for the case where the decision-maker observes many noisy cost vectors on a fixed network. The cost vectors are denoised by an eigenvalue decomposition (PCA) of their covariance matrix. Dijkstra's algorithm then runs on the result. We test this on the $5\times5$ grid of \citet{elmachtoub2022},…
社会网络数据中处理效应的识别与估计:当社会连接存在混杂时
In observational network data, the adoption of a treatment and the formation of social ties often depend on the same characteristics that affect outcomes. We propose a generalized propensity score for each unit's effective treatment, built from a model for treatment assignment and a dyadic model for network formation, which may include latent node heterogeneity. The score is marginalized over the network given covariates rather than conditioned on the realized network, and…

Inferring the structure of population-level functional connectivity networks from multi-subject functional magnetic resonance imaging data is essential for understanding the connectivity patterns underlying cognitive and behavioral functions. Graphical models provide a formal statistical framework for inferring the graph structure. However, the multi-level nature of functional magnetic resonance imaging data---where each level corresponds, for instance, to a…

We develop standard errors for estimates of causal effects in settings where the distribution of treatment exposures is known but potentially exhibits complicated dependence patterns across units. Such dependence arises, for example, in settings with spillovers/interference across units or when the treatment assignment is spatially correlated. Our variance estimator generalizes several properties of the Neyman variance estimator for completely randomized experiments to…
