This paper introduces a Bayesian framework designed to address two critical econometric challenges in empirical growth studies: variable selection and cross-sectional dependence. We first propose a growth regression model that incorporates cross-sectional dependence through a multi-factor structure and accounts for variable selection with sparse coefficients. We then introduce a new Bayesian Adaptive LASSO estimator specifically designed for this model, capable of performing variable selection while simultaneously addressing cross-sectional dependence. To validate this framework, we conduct a Monte Carlo study, demonstrating that our Adaptive Bayesian LASSO growth regression model with a factor structure consistently outperforms three benchmark models across all evaluation metrics. Furthermore, we apply our model to a dataset encompassing 55 candidate variables across 71 countries from 1961 to 2019. Our empirical comparison confirms the superiority of our model over the benchmark models. Additionally, our model identifies five global factors and 16 key growth determinants, with robustness checks using Principal Component Analysis and instrumental variables confirming the reliability of our findings.

This study investigates spatial panel data models with a multifactor error structure and multiple structural breaks occurring in the coefficients of both spatial lagged and explanatory variables. While extensive research has addressed cross-sectional dependence in panel data, including approaches that integrate spatial and factor structures within a single framework, few studies account for time-varying model parameters and achieving consistent estimation remains a…

The Granular Instrumental Variables (GIV) methodology exploits panels with factor error structures to construct instruments to estimate structural time series models with endogeneity even after controlling for latent factors. We extend the GIV methodology in several dimensions. First, we extend the identification procedure to a large $N$ and large $T$ framework, which depends on the asymptotic Herfindahl index of the size distribution of $N$ cross-sectional units. Second, we…
条件线性的矩阵正态状态空间模型
We develop a class of linear state space models for matrix-valued time series data where the state is a latent matrix normal process. We derive matrix versions of the Kalman filter, log-likelihood, and smoother enabling estimation of the latent state matrix as well as the model's parameters. To conduct Bayesian inference, we provide algorithms that draw from the joint posterior distribution of the latent state matrices conditional on the observed data and parameters. We…

We develop a nonparametric quantile panel regression model.Within each quantile, the quantile function is a combination of linear and nonlinear parts, which we approximate using Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART).Cross-sectional information is captured through a conditionally heteroscedastic latent factor. The nonparametric feature enhances flexibility, while the panel feature increases the number of observations in the tails. We develop Bayesian methods for inference…

In this article, we consider estimation of common structural breaks in panel data models with unobservable interactive fixed effects. We introduce a penalized principal component (PPC) estimation procedure with an adaptive group fused LASSO to detect the multiple structural breaks in the models. Under some mild conditions, we show that with probability approaching one the proposed method can correctly determine the unknown number of breaks and consistently estimate the…

We develop a Bayesian non-parametric quantile panel regression model. Within each quantile, the response function is a convex combination of a linear model and a non-linear function, which we approximate using Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART). Cross-sectional information at the pth quantile is captured through a conditionally heteroscedastic latent factor. The non-parametric feature of our model enhances flexibility, while the panel feature, by exploiting…
