Factor modeling is an essential tool for exploring intrinsic dependence structures in financial and economic studies through the construction of common latent variables, including the famous Fama–French three factor models for the description of asset returns in finance. However, most of the existing statistical methods for analyzing latent factors have been developed through a linear approach. In this article, we consider a semiparametric factor model and present a regularized estimation procedure for linear component identification on the transformed factor that combines B-spline basis function approximations and the smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty. In addition, a binary segmentation based algorithm is also developed to identify the homogeneous groups in loading parameters, producing more efficient estimation by pooling information across units within the same group. We carefully derive the asymptotic properties for the proposed procedures. Finally, simulation studies and a real data analysis are conducted to evaluate the finite sample performance of our proposals.

We develop a continuous-time penalized regression framework for the estimation of time-varying coefficients and variable selection when both the response and covariates are Itô semimartingales with jumps. The coefficient paths are approximated by spline basis expansions and estimated via least squares from truncated high-frequency increments. In a finite-dimensional setting, we establish consistency and derive a feasible asymptotic distribution for the integrated coefficient…

Functional data are frequently accompanied by a parametric template that describes the typical shapes of the functions. However, these parametric templates can incur significant bias, which undermines both utility and interpretability. To correct for model misspecification, we augment the parametric template with an infinite-dimensional nonparametric functional basis. The nonparametric basis functions are learned from the data and constrained to be orthogonal to the…

This paper introduces a Projected Principal Component Analysis (Projected-PCA), which employees principal component analysis to the projected (smoothed) data matrix onto a given linear space spanned by covariates. When it applies to high-dimensional factor analysis, the projection removes noise components. We show that the unobserved latent factors can be more accurately estimated than the conventional PCA if the projection is genuine, or more precisely, when the factor…
High‐dimensional non‐stationary time series, which reveal both complex trends and stochastic behaviour, occur in many scientific fields, e.g. macroeconomics, finance, neuroeconomics, etc. To model these, we propose a generalized dynamic semi‐parametric factor model with a two‐step estimation procedure. After choosing smoothed functional principal components as space functions (factor loadings), we extract various temporal trends by employing variable selection techniques for…

We test for temporal stability in local linear projection coefficients of observable factors on latent ones embedded in a high-dimensional vector obeying a linear factor model. The proposed test explores the fact that, under the null hypothesis, residuals from global linear projections of observable factors on latent ones, computed over a fixed time interval via Principal Component Analysis (PCA), should also be locally uncorrelated with the PCA factors. The test is fully…
动态矩阵因子模型:协变量驱动的时变载荷
This paper proposes a covariate-driven matrix factor model in which the row and column loading matrices evolve as nonparametric functions of an observable time-varying covariate sequence. This flexible specification accommodates dynamic factor loadings driven by the temporal characteristics of the covariate. We develop a nonparametric estimation procedure that combines kernel smoothing with principal component analysis (PCA). Under high-dimensional asymptotics, we establish…
