We study intraday stochastic volatility for four liquid stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange using a new dynamic Skellam model for high-frequency tick-by-tick discrete price changes. Since the likelihood function is analytically intractable, we rely on numerical methods for its evaluation. Given the high number of observations per series per day (1000 to 10,000), we adopt computationally efficient methods including Monte Carlo integration. The intraday dynamics of volatility and the high number of trades without price impact require nontrivial adjustments to the basic dynamic Skellam model. In-sample residual diagnostics and goodness-of-fit statistics show that the final model provides a good fit to the data. An extensive day-to-day forecasting study of intraday volatility shows that the dynamic modified Skellam model provides accurate forecasts compared to alternative modeling approaches. Supplementary materials for this article are available online.
网络实现 GARCH–Itô 模型:基于高频识别的波动率溢出
We introduce a network realized GARCH-Itô model in which volatility transmission is a dynamic relation among the latent daily integrated volatilities of multiple assets. An unknown directed and signed network is embedded in a continuous-time variance process and appears in the resulting exponential daily recursion. Intraday returns identify integrated volatility and hence the network that governs its propagation. For a fixed network template, feasible estimation based on…

Many prediction and decision-making problems in operations research involve path-valued covariates -- data that evolve over time -- for which path signatures have become a canonical feature representation. Their use is justified by a universal approximation theorem, but this is an existence result: it guarantees that a finite-level signature can approximate any continuous path functional, without quantifying how fast the approximation error decreases as the truncation level…

Realised volatility has become increasingly prominent in volatility forecasting due to its ability to capture intraday price fluctuations. With a growing variety of realised volatility estimators, each with unique advantages and limitations, selecting an optimal estimator may introduce challenges. In this thesis, aiming to synthesise the impact of various realised volatility measures on volatility forecasting, we propose an extension of the Realised GARCH model that…

We propose methods to improve the forecasts from generalized autoregressive score (GAS) models (Creal, et al., 2013; Harvey, 2013) by localizing their parameters using decision trees and random forests. These methods avoid the curse of dimensionality faced by kernel-based approaches, and allow one to draw on information from multiple state variables simultaneously. We apply the new models to four distinct empirical analyses, and in all applications the proposed new methods…
利用混频数据改进密度预测:贝叶斯方法
We construct a modeling framework that allows for the flexible contribution of intraday information to predict the conditional distribution of asset returns. A flexible spline specification is proposed to capture the contribution of intraday returns inside GARCH and stochastic volatility specifications for daily returns. The “focused Bayesian” prediction framework is adopted to allow the intraday contribution to the simpler GARCH specification to be trained according to the…

We present a new class of Bayesian dynamic models for bivariate price-realized volatility time series in financial forecasting. A novel dynamic gamma process model adopted for realized volatility is integrated with traditional Bayesian dynamic linear models (DLMs) for asset price series. This represents reduced-form volatility leverage and feedback effects through use of realized volatility proxies in conditional DLMs for prices or returns, coupled with the synthesis of…
