We provide identification results for a broad class of learning models in which continuous outcomes depend on three types of unobservables: known heterogeneity, initially unknown heterogeneity that may be revealed over time, and transitory uncertainty. We consider a common environment where the researcher only has access to a short panel on choices and realized outcomes. We establish identification of the outcome equation parameters and the distribution of the unobservables, under the standard assumption that unknown heterogeneity and uncertainty are normally distributed. We also show that, absent known heterogeneity, the model is identified without making any distributional assumption. We then derive the asymptotic properties of a sieve MLE estimator for the model parameters, and devise a tractable profile likelihood-based estimation procedure. Our estimator exhibits good finite-sample properties. Finally, we illustrate our approach with an application to ability learning in the context of occupational choice. Our results point to substantial ability learning based on realized wages.

This paper studies semiparametric identification of substitution and complementarity patterns between two goods using a panel multinomial choice model with bundles. The model allows the two goods to be either substitutes or complements and admits heterogeneous complementarity through observed characteristics. I first provide testable implications for the complementarity relationship between goods. I then characterize the sharp identified set for the model parameters and…
面板动态联立方程模型的统计推断
We study the identification and estimation of panel dynamic simultaneous equations models. We show that the presence of time-persistent individual-specific effects does not lead to changes in the identification conditions of traditional Cowles Commission dynamic simultaneous equations models. However, the limiting properties of the estimators depend on the way the cross-section dimension, N, or the time series dimension, T, goes to infinity. We propose three limited…
非可分面板数据模型中结构与因果效应的线性估计
This paper develops linear estimators for structural and causal parameters of nonseparable models using panel data. These models incorporate unobserved, time-varying, individual heterogeneity, which may be correlated with the regressors. Estimation is based on an approximation of a conditional average potential outcome by a linear sieve specification with individual-specific parameters. Effects of interest are estimated by a bias corrected average of individual ridge…
非线性结构模型中边际效应分布与分位数的面板估计:垃圾食品需求应用
In this paper, we propose a framework to estimate the distribution of marginal effects in a general class of structural models that allow for very general nonlinearities, high dimensional heterogeneity, and unrestricted correlation between the persistent components of this heterogeneity and all covariates. The main idea is to form a derivative dependent variable using two periods of the panel and use differences in outcome variables of nearby subpopulations to obtain the…
线性面板模型中相关随机系数的分布
We consider a static linear panel model with both correlated and uncorrelated random coefficients, where the former can depend arbitrarily on observable regressors while the latter are independent of them. We provide sufficient conditions for identification of the distributions of the random coefficients without imposing restrictions on the time-series structure of the error terms in short panels. Our framework applies to regular and irregular designs. The distribution of…
含内生主导单元的非线性空间动态面板模型:份额数据应用
This article develops a nonlinear spatial dynamic panel data model with one particularly interesting application to a structural interaction model for share data. To account for effects from dominant (popular) units, the spatial weights matrix in our model can allow for unbounded column sums. To account for heterogeneity, our model includes two-way fixed effects and heteroscedastic errors. We further consider the potential endogeneity of the spatial weight matrix constructed…
