Standard assumptions incorporated into Bayesian model selection procedures result in procedures that are not competitive with commonly used penalized likelihood methods. We propose modifications of these methods by imposing nonlocal prior densities on model parameters. We show that the resulting model selection procedures are consistent in linear model settings when the number of possible covariates p is bounded by the number of observations n, a property that has not been extended to other model selection procedures. In addition to consistently identifying the true model, the proposed procedures provide accurate estimates of the posterior probability that each identified model is correct. Through simulation studies, we demonstrate that these model selection procedures perform as well or better than commonly used penalized likelihood methods in a range of simulation settings. Proofs of the primary theorems are provided in the Supplementary Material that is available online.

Ultra-high-dimensional genomic studies require simultaneous identification of sparse signals, control of spurious discoveries, and computationally feasible inference when the number of predictors can reach hundreds of thousands or more. We propose Bayesian Univariate-Guided Sparse Regression (BUGS), a global--local shrinkage framework that incorporates marginal association information directly into the prior through continuous modulation of shrinkage. By embedding univariate…

Neurons in the visual system are selective for specific spatial and temporal stimulus features, described by their \emph{receptive field}. Estimating one means a coefficient per pixel per time bin from few trials -- a high-dimensional problem requiring regularization. Sparse regularizers such as the LASSO handle the dimension but select pixels independently at each time point, with nothing to keep the region coherent in space or smooth in time; it can fragment or reorganize…

We consider the problem of identifying promising subpopulations in terms of treatment effectiveness or treatment effect heterogeneity, from a Bayesian decision theoretic perspective. We first show that a straight-forward application of Bayesian decision theory to subgroup detection leads to a counter-intuitive risk-seeking (RS) behavior. Motivated by this observation, we introduce the Bayesian Risk-Aware Inference and Detection of Subgroups (BRAIDS) utility and use it to…

Discovering interpretable subgroups whose complier effects deviate from the average is a central goal of instrumental variable analysis under imperfect compliance, yet existing tree-based methods degrade when most covariates are irrelevant to the effect. We propose Shrinkage Bayesian Causal Forest with Instrumental Variable (SBCF-IV) for discovering and estimating subgroups with heterogeneous Complier Average Causal Effects (CACE) in sparse high-dimensional settings. SBCF-IV…

Density deconvolution is an ill-posed inverse problem because recovering the latent density amplifies high-frequency variation in the observed data. We propose a two-stage likelihood procedure. The first estimator maximizes the convolution likelihood over a regularized Gaussian-mixture sieve; the second treats this fit as an empirical prior and averages the fitted conditional latent densities. Under fixed-model misspecification, the estimators generally have different…

Data assimilation (DA) integrates observational information with model predictions to improve state estimation in complex systems. While filtering provides the basis for online forecasts by using only past and present observations, it can exhibit delays and biases when the underlying dynamics evolve rapidly or undergo regime transitions. Smoothing, which additionally incorporates future observations, provides a natural pipeline for hindcasting and reanalysis that yields an…
