This paper develops a daily structural VAR for identifying oil price shocks from conditional heteroskedasticity and quantifies the transmission of their timevarying uncertainty. Identification exploits volatility clustering and spillovers in a structural GARCH specification and the complete identified set is derived. We derive covariance impulse response functions and introduce a time-varying forecast error variance decomposition (TV-FEVD) that allows for a decomposition of short-horizon forecast uncertainty across episodes. We study the asymptotic properties of a two-step quasi-maximum likelihood estimator and demonstrate via extensive simulations the robustness of the estimator across a wide range of data-generating distributions. Empirically, the model identifies three daily shocks with distinct first- and second-order transmission. TV-FEVD shows that oil-price forecast uncertainty in early 2020 shifted from aggregate business-cycle uncertainty, as pandemic news affected expected economic conditions, to oil-market tightness risk during the Saudi–Russia price war and production cuts.

Economic and financial models -- such as vector autoregressions, local projections, and multivariate volatility models -- feature complex dynamic interactions and spillovers across many time series. These models can be integrated into a unified framework, with high-dimensional parameters identified by moment conditions. As the number of parameters and moment conditions may surpass the sample size, we propose adding a double penalty to the empirical likelihood criterion to…
Summary We complement previous partial global identification results for the non-Gaussian structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) model by showing that in the absence of co-skewness among the strucural shocks, the skewed shocks are identified and in the absence of excess co-kurtosis, the shocks with non-zero excess kurtosis are identified. The former case has the advantage that dependent conditional heteroskedasticity is allowed for. In each case, the remaining shocks are…

We propose a new variational approximation of the joint posterior distribution of the log-volatility in the context of large Bayesian VARs. In contrast to existing approaches that are based on local approximations, the new proposal provides a global approximation that takes into account the entire support of the joint distribution. In a Monte Carlo study we show that the new global approximation is over an order of magnitude more accurate than existing alternatives. We…
We tackle the issue of producing point, sign, and density forecasts for the monthly real price of carbon in the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). We show that Bayesian Vector Autoregressive (BVAR) models augmented with factors based on macroeconomic and financial variables yield improvements in point and density forecasting performance, with the largest point-forecast gains emerging at intermediate and longer horizons. In particular, the one-factor BVAR model…
We identify a yield news shock as an innovation that does not move Treasury yields contemporaneously but explains a maximum share of their future variation. Yields do not immediately respond to the news shock as the initial reaction of term premiums and expected short rates offset each other. While the impact on term premiums fades quickly, expected short rates and thus yields decline persistently. As a result, the shock explains a staggering 50% of Treasury yield variation…
时间序列与金融计量经济学前沿:概览
Two of the fastest growing frontiers in econometrics and quantitative finance are time series and financial econometrics. Significant theoretical contributions to financial econometrics have been made by experts in statistics, econometrics, mathematics, and time series analysis. The purpose of this special issue of the journal on “Frontiers in Time Series and Financial Econometrics” is to highlight several areas of research by leading academics in which novel methods have…
