Abstract We propose new methods for comparing the out‐of‐sample forecasting performance of two competing models in the presence of possible instabilities. The main idea is to develop a measure of the relative local forecasting performance for the two models, and to investigate its stability over time by means of statistical tests. We propose two tests (the Fluctuation test and the One‐Time Reversal test) that analyze the evolution of the models' relative performance over historical samples. In contrast to previous approaches to forecast comparison, which are based on measures of global performance, we focus on the entire time path of the models' relative performance, which may contain useful information that is lost when looking for the model that forecasts best on average. We apply our tests to the analysis of the time variation in the out‐of‐sample forecasting performance of monetary models of exchange rate determination relative to the random walk. 鞅持续触发时:真实预测流中的随时有效门控
Machine learning systems are increasingly corrected while they run, and the decision of when to intervene is increasingly delegated to statistical monitors. Anytime-valid inference promises evidence that can be acted on at any moment, exactly the guarantee this setting needs, and it is moving from theory into deployed monitoring. Conformal test martingales are the change-detection instrument, and Ville's inequality caps their false-alarm probability on exchangeable data. The…
平滑结构变化下 FAVAR 模型的时变模型平均
Factor-augmented vector autoregressive (FAVAR) models serve as a powerful tool for forecasting economic and financial variables, particularly in environments with a large number of predictors. In this study, we propose a time-varying model-averaging method for FAVAR (TVMA-FAVAR) that accommodates smooth structural changes. To estimate the optimal time-varying combination weights, we develop a local leave-one-out cross-validation (LLOCV) criterion that is asymptotically…
时变向量自回归的模型平均
This paper proposes a novel time-varying model averaging (TVMA) approach to enhancing forecast accuracy for multivariate time series subject to structural changes. The TVMA method averages predictions from a set of time-varying vector autoregressive models using optimal time-varying combination weights selected by minimizing a penalized local criterion. This allows the relative importance of different models to adaptively evolve over time in response to structural shifts. We…

Parameter instability has been widely documented to lead to poor predictive accuracy for economic forecasting models. Adaptive schemes for data weighting, such as rolling-window estimation, only involve a single tuning parameter (akin to a bandwidth) and have been widely used to address this issue. The importance of the shape of the weighting scheme (kernel) has received far less attention in the forecasting literature. In this paper we show that in practice there can be a…
循环神经网络的向后相干性与隐状态稳定性:准逆鞅理论
Recurrent neural networks maintain a hidden state $h_t$, but its probabilistic meaning is often unclear. We study hidden-state stability through \emph{backward coherence}: the extent to which $h_t$ can be reconstructed from $h_{t+1}$ by a learned backward projector $g_φ$. Under contraction and summable backward drift, the hidden-state sequence forms a quasi-reverse-martingale. This yields almost-sure convergence, rates under mixing, an interpretable limiting representation,…
具有结构突变干预的方向位移 Dirichlet ARMA 组成时间序列模型
Compositional time series frequently exhibit structural breaks due to external shocks, policy changes, or market disruptions. Standard methods either ignore such breaks or handle them through fixed effects that cannot extrapolate beyond the sample, or step-function dummies that impose instantaneous adjustment. We develop a Bayesian Dirichlet ARMA model augmented with a directional-shift intervention mechanism that captures structural breaks through three interpretable…
