Abstract We introduce a multi‐level smooth transition model for a panel of time series, which can be used to examine the presence of common nonlinear business cycle features across many variables. The model is positioned in between a fully pooled model, which imposes such common features, and a fully heterogeneous model, which allows for unrestricted nonlinearity. We introduce a second‐stage model linking the parameters that determine the timing of the switches between business cycle regimes to observable explanatory variables, thereby allowing for lead–lag relationships across panel members. We discuss representation, estimation by concentrated simulated maximum likelihood and inference. We illustrate our model using quarterly industrial production in 19 US manufacturing sectors, and document that there are subtle differences across sectors in leads and lags for switches between business cycle recessions and expansions. 在 Stata 中检验和估计时间序列与面板数据的结构突变
Identifying structural change is a crucial step in analysis of time series and panel data. The longer the time span, the higher the likelihood that the model parameters have changed as a result of major disruptive events, such as the 2007--2008 financial crisis and the 2020 COVID--19 outbreak. Detecting the existence of breaks, and dating them is therefore necessary, not only for estimation purposes but also for understanding drivers of change and their effect on…

This review discusses methods of testing for a panel unit root. Modern approaches to testing in cross-sectionally correlated panels are discussed, preceding the analysis with an analysis of independent panels. In addition, methods for testing in the case of non-linearity in the data (for example, in the case of structural breaks) are presented, as well as methods for testing in short panels, when the time dimension is small and finite. In conclusion, links to existing…
The power of standard panel cointegration statistics may be affected by misspecification errors if structural breaks in the parameters generating the process are not considered. In addition, the presence of cross-section dependence among the panel units can distort the empirical size of the statistics. We therefore design a testing procedure that allows for both structural breaks and cross-section dependence when testing the null hypothesis of no cointegration. The paper…
This paper proposes a test statistic for the null hypothesis of panel stationarity that allows for the presence of multiple structural breaks. Two different specifications are considered depending on the structural breaks affecting the individual effects and/or the time trend. The model is flexible enough to allow the number of breaks and their position to differ across individuals. The test is shown to have a standard normal limit distribution with a good finite sample…
通胀率存在单位根吗?序贯突变与面板模型的证据
Using sequential trend break and panel data models, we investigate the unit root hypothesis for the inflation rates of thirteen OECD countries. With individual country tests, we find evidence of stationarity in only four of the thirteen countries. The results are more striking with the panel data model. We can strongly reject the unit root hypothesis both for a panel of all thirteen countries and for a number of smaller panels consisting of as few as three countries. The…
基于 Copula 马尔可夫模型的 Weibull 时间序列变点估计
We study offline change-point estimation for time series data exhibiting nonlinear serial dependence. To address this problem, we propose a copula-based Markov chain model with Weibull marginal distributions, which is suitable for modeling nonnegative data such as event times and volatility measures. Nonlinear dependence is incorporated through the Clayton and Joe copulas, allowing the model to capture asymmetric lower-tail and upper-tail dependence structures, respectively.…
