By comparing the expansions of the empirical log-likelihood ratio and the empirical cumulant generating function calculated at the saddlepoint, we investigate the relationship between empirical likelihood and empirical saddlepoint approximations. This leads to a nonparametric approximation of the density of a multivariate M-estimator based on the empirical likelihood and, on the other hand, it provides nonparametric confidence regions based on the empirical cumulant generating function. Some examples illustrate the use of the empirical likelihood in saddlepoint approximations and vice versa.
This article introduces a framework for evaluating statistical decisions under both prior ambiguity and likelihood misspecification. We begin with an ambiguity set - a frequentist model that pairs a possibly misspecified likelihood with every possible prior - and uniformly expand it by a Kullback-Leibler radius to accommodate likelihood misspecification. We show that optimal decisions under this framework are equivalent to minimax decisions with an exponentially tilted loss…

We develop model checks for conditional moment restrictions whose tuning parameters, the kernel bandwidth and the regularization level, are selected by cross-validation. The tests regress the estimated residuals on the covariates via kernel ridge regression (KRR), yielding a coefficient function in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) that vanishes under the null and is nonzero for any misspecification not annihilated by the Neyman projection. Our central contribution…
BLP 模型中的条件矩估计与推断
The random-coefficient demand model of Berry, Levinsohn, and Pakes (1995) is commonly estimated by the generalized method of moments (GMM), using an unconditional moment restriction with a fixed set of instruments. Identification of the model, however, rests on a conditional moment restriction. The two are not equivalent: the unconditional restriction may admit additional parameter values. We construct a counterexample in which the model is identified by the conditional…

We propose a nonparametric test for unobserved treatment effect heterogeneity in regression discontinuity designs. Under the null of no unobserved heterogeneity, a transformed outcome that imputes treated potential outcomes for untreated units must have a continuous conditional distribution at the cutoff. We convert this implication into an integrated conditional-moment restriction using characteristic functions, thereby allowing the conditional local average treatment…

Stock return predictability, should it exist, is likely to be episodic in nature. In order to exploit such pockets of predictability it is essential that they are rapidly detected, in real-time, as the nascent predictive regime emerges. This will typically entail the repeated (sequential) application of one-shot end-of-sample predictability statistics, updated as new data become available. Consequently, in addition to dealing with the usual inference problems caused by…

Many panel data methods, while allowing for general dependence between covariates and time-invariant agent-specific heterogeneity, place strong a priori restrictions on feedback: how past outcomes, covariates, and heterogeneity map into future covariate levels. Ruling out feedback entirely, as often occurs in practice, is unattractive in many dynamic economic settings. We provide a general characterization of all feedback and heterogeneity robust (FHR) moment conditions for…
