We develop a Bayesian Wald-type test for detecting temporal differences in connectedness from variance decompositions, and establish the asymptotic normality of impulse response functions and variance decomposition matrices at fixed local time points. The resulting test statistic is asymptotically χ 2 distributed under the null hypothesis and performs well in Monte Carlo simulations. Applying our methodology to high-frequency options data on sectoral exchange-traded funds (ETFs) from January 2013 to June 2023, we identify and quantify monetary policy surprises following Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announcements. Our empirical results indicate that total connectedness among sectoral ETF implied volatilities increases significantly following FOMC announcements, with these elevated connectedness levels persisting for approximately one hour on days with monetary policy surprises. Our findings indicate more than one-fifth of FOMC announcements surprise financial markets.

This paper advances the local projections (LP) method by addressing its inefficiency in high-frequency economic and financial data with volatility clustering. We incorporate a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) process to resolve serial correlation issues and extend the model with GARCH-X and GARCH-HAR structures. Monte Carlo simulations show that exploiting serial dependence in LP error structures improves efficiency across forecast horizons,…
This paper discusses the effects of temporal aggregation on causality and forecasting in multivariate GARCH processes. It is shown that spurious instantaneous causality in variance will only appear in degenerated cases, but that spurious Granger causality will be more common. For forecasting volatility, it is generally advisable to aggregate forecasts of the disaggregate series rather than forecasting the aggregated series directly, and unlike for vector autoregressive…

We propose a new variational approximation of the joint posterior distribution of the log-volatility in the context of large Bayesian VARs. In contrast to existing approaches that are based on local approximations, the new proposal provides a global approximation that takes into account the entire support of the joint distribution. In a Monte Carlo study we show that the new global approximation is over an order of magnitude more accurate than existing alternatives. We…

This paper develops a daily structural VAR for identifying oil price shocks from conditional heteroskedasticity and quantifies the transmission of their timevarying uncertainty. Identification exploits volatility clustering and spillovers in a structural GARCH specification and the complete identified set is derived. We derive covariance impulse response functions and introduce a time-varying forecast error variance decomposition (TV-FEVD) that allows for a decomposition of…
依赖数据下高维矩约束的经验似然方法
Economic and financial models -- such as vector autoregressions, local projections, and multivariate volatility models -- feature complex dynamic interactions and spillovers across many time series. These models can be integrated into a unified framework, with high-dimensional parameters identified by moment conditions. As the number of parameters and moment conditions may surpass the sample size, we propose adding a double penalty to the empirical likelihood criterion to…
含动态潜在因子的小维度 VAR 模型中的工具变量推断
We study semiparametric inference in a small-dimensional vector autoregressive (VAR) model of order p augmented by unobservable common factors with a dynamic described by a VAR process of order q . This state-space specification is useful to measure separately the direct causality effects and the responses to dynamic common factors. We show that the state-space parameters are identifiable from the autocovariance function of the observed process. We estimate the model by…
