Since their introduction by Abadie and Gardeazabal, Synthetic Control (SC) methods have quickly become one of the leading methods for estimating causal effects in observational studies in settings with panel data.Formal discussions often motivate SC methods by the assumption that the potential outcomes were generated by a factor model. Here we study SC methods from a design-based perspective, assuming a model for the selection of the treated unit(s) and period(s).We show that the standard SC estimator is generally biased under random assignment. We propose a Modified Unbiased Synthetic Control (MUSC) estimator that guarantees unbiasedness under random assignment and derive its exact, randomization-based, finitesample variance. We also propose an unbiased estimator for this variance. We document in settings with real data that under random assignment, SC-type estimators can have root mean-squared errors that are substantially lower than that of other common estimators. We show that such an improvement is weakly guaranteed if the treated period is similar to the other periods, for example, if the treated period was randomly selected. While our results only directly apply in settings where treatment is assigned randomly, we believe that they can complement model-based approaches even for observational studies.
平均处理效应局部化:合成控制中的投影方法
Many real-world policies and business interventions require assessing short-term effects to inform timely decisions, even though most causal inference methods focus on long-term average treatment effects. In this article, we introduce average treatment effect localization (ATEL), which captures localized, short-term policy impacts in panel data settings with a single treated unit and provides early indicators of policy impact. To accommodate both time-varying and nonlinear…
异质性面板数据模型的估计及其在项目评估中的应用
This article studies panel data models with two-dimensional unobserved slope heterogeneity and interactive fixed effects. We propose a two-step approach to estimate the parameters in the model. We apply the proposed model to estimate heterogeneous treatment effects at both individual and aggregate levels. Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed estimators perform remarkably well in finite samples in comparison with some existing methods such as the synthetic control…
存在干扰时合成控制的稳健回归方法
Synthetic control methods are widely used for policy evaluation, but most existing approaches rule out interference among units, compromising validity when such effects are present. We develop a framework that accommodates contaminated donor pools and unknown interference patterns through two stages: factor-model adjustment for unobserved confounding, followed by robust regression in which direct and interference effects appear as a sparse outlier component. We study two…
合成增量效应:将合成控制推广至动态处理效应
We propose a generalization of the synthetic control methods to the setting with dynamic treatment effects, in which each unit receives multiple treatments sequentially, according to an adaptive policy that depends on a latent, endogenously time-varying confounding state. Under a low-rank latent factor model assumption, which admits linear time-varying and time-invariant dynamic triangular systems as special cases, we develop an identification strategy for any unit-specific…

从控制到处理:超越已观测面板的因果预测
Conventional panel data methods recover retrospective counterfactuals within the observed horizon. Many policy decisions, however, are prospective: how would an untreated unit evolve beyond the observed panel under an intervention it has not previously experienced? We develop a causal forecasting framework that combines the counterfactual logic of synthetic controls with multivariate time-series extrapolation. Under a latent factor model, we impose low-rank structure on the…
