We introduce the balanced correlation parametrization (BCP), which maps positive-definite correlation matrices one-to-one onto the set of symmetric hollow matrices. A key feature of the parametrization is that both the transformation and its inverse are available in closed form. It combines marginal and partial correlations, is inverse-consistent and equivariant under variable permutations and sign changes, and preserves block structure. A novel property of BCP is that it preserves correlation sparsity as the dimension tends to infinity under suitable factor conditions, providing a basis for sparse high-dimensional correlation modeling. An empirical illustration using standardized idiosyncratic daily stock returns for 1,765 equities over 15 years shows that BCP retains the approximate sparsity pattern and magnitudes of shock correlations, and that it yields accurate positive-definite reconstructions under sparse coordinate restrictions.
This paper introduces MarketGAN, a factor-based generative framework for high-dimensional asset return generation under severe data scarcity. We embed an explicit asset-pricing factor structure as an economic inductive bias and generate returns as a single joint vector, thereby preserving cross-sectional dependence and tail co-movement alongside inter-temporal dynamics. MarketGAN employs generative adversarial learning with a temporal convolutional network (TCN) backbone,…
We study whether liquidity and volatility proxies of a core set of cryptoassets generate spillovers that forecast market-wide risk. Our empirical framework integrates three statistical layers: (A) interactions between core liquidity and returns, (B) principal-component relations linking liquidity and returns, and (C) volatility-factor projections that capture cross-sectional volatility crowding. The analysis is complemented by vector autoregression impulse responses and…
We propose a novel approach to estimate high-dimensional global bank network connectedness in both the time and frequency domains. By employing a factor model with sparse VAR idiosyncratic components, we decompose system-wide connectedness (SWC) into two key drivers: (i) common component shocks and (ii) idiosyncratic shocks. We also provide bootstrap confidence bands for all SWC measures. Furthermore, spectral density estimation allows us to disentangle SWC into short-,…
This paper proposes a robust, shocks-adaptive portfolio in a large-dimensional assets universe where the number of assets could be comparable to or even larger than the sample size. It is well documented that portfolios based on optimizations are sensitive to outliers in return data. We deal with outliers by proposing a robust factor model, contributing methodologically through the development of a robust principal component analysis (PCA) for factor model estimation and a…
We introduce the conditional Maximum Composite Likelihood (MCL) estimation method for the stochastic factor ordered Probit model of credit rating transitions of firms. This model is recommended for internal credit risk assessment procedures in banks and financial institutions under the Basel III regulations. Its exact likelihood function involves a high-dimensional integral, which can be approximated numerically before maximization. However, the estimated migration risk and…
We develop a factor stochastic volatility model that incorporates leverage effects, return asymmetry, and heavy tails across all systematic and idiosyncratic model components. Our model leads to a flexible high-dimensional dependence structure that allows for time-varying correlations, tail dependence, and volatility response to both systematic and idiosyncratic return shocks. We develop an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for posterior estimation based on the…
