SUMMARY Sign restrictions have become increasingly popular for identifying shocks in structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) models. So far there are no techniques for validating the shocks identified via such restrictions. Although in an ideal setting the sign restrictions specify shocks of interest, sign restrictions may be invalidated by measurement errors, data adjustments or omitted variables. We model changes in the volatility of the shocks via a Markov switching (MS) mechanism and use this device to give the data a chance to object to sign restrictions. The approach is illustrated by considering a small model for the market of crude oil. Earlier findings that oil supply shocks explain only a very small fraction of movements in the price of oil are confirmed and it is found that the importance of aggregate demand shocks for oil price movements has declined since the mid 1980s. Two frequent approaches for identifying structural VARs are external instruments, which carry economic content but are often weak, and non-Gaussianity of the shocks, which provides statistical identification but carries no economic meaning. We combine the two strategies in a single generalized method of moments framework. This hybrid approach point-identifies the target shocks while also identifying the non-target shocks up to sign and ordering. Under suitable rank…

Local projections (LPs) have become a standard tool for estimating dynamic effects in macroeconomics and are typically implemented using ordinary least squares (OLS) for a given lag order. We propose an alternative approach that exploits additional lags as excluded instrumental variables (IVs). Under a finite-order model with martingale-difference shocks, the resulting (optimally weighted) IV estimator is never asymptotically less efficient than OLS and, as we show, can…

We develop inference for heterogeneous panel vector autoregressive (VAR) models and their structural impulse response functions, where the error terms are dependent in the cross-sectional and time dimensions (two-way dependence). For proxy-identified structural VARs, we first adapt mean-group estimation and construct a closed-form pooled identification. Considering the reduced-form VAR dynamics, residual covariances, and structural parameters, we derive a joint central limit…

A new form of the fiscal multiplier suited to data expressed as gross growth rates is proposed, together with a structural vector autoregression that isolates discretionary fiscal policy from regime and rule-based components. Because cumulating growth-rate responses over a horizon involves a product rather than a sum, the proposed multiplier is multiplicative: both numerator and denominator are polynomials in the size of the fiscal impulse, so the multiplier varies…
Comparing dependence structures between two related multivariate time series is of fundamental interest in many scientific applications, where changes may occur in both directed temporal interactions and contemporaneous connectivity. Modeling each time series by a vector autoregressive (VAR) model, we propose a new framework for estimation and inference of differential Granger causality (DiffGC) and differential network (DiffNet) structures in high dimensions. The proposed…

We answer the question posed in the title with a nonlinear mixed-frequency vector autoregression, estimated with Bayesian additive regression trees. The model combines monthly macro-financial variables with quarterly bank lending survey data, and identifies the dynamic responses from high-frequency policy surprises. Sign asymmetry dominates; a tightening produces monetary policy transmission mostly in line with the theoretical predictions, whereas easing of any size produces…
