Let $X$ and $Y$ be two random variables with continuous distribution functions $F$ and $G$ and means $\mu$ and $\xi$. In a linear model, the crucial property of the contrast $\Delta = \xi - \mu$ is that $X + \Delta =_\mathscr{L} Y$, where $= _\mathscr{L}$ denotes equality in law. When the linear model does not hold, there is no real number $\Delta$ such that $X + \Delta = _\mathscr{L} Y$. However, it is shown that if parameters are allowed to be function valued, there is essentially only one function $\Delta(\bullet)$ such that $X + \Delta(X) = _\mathscr{L} Y$, and this function can be defined by $\Delta(x) = G^{-1}(F(x)) - x$. The estimate $\hat{\Delta}_N(x) = G_n^{-1}(F_m(x)) - x$ of $\Delta(x)$ is considered, where $G_n$ and $F_m$ are the empirical distribution functions. Confidence bands based on this estimate are given and the asymptotic distribution of $\hat{\Delta}_N(\bullet)$ is derived. For general models in analysis of variance, contrasts that can be expressed as sums of differences of means can be replaced by sums of functions of the above kind.

We first provide inference on the quantile function of the bid distribution in firstprice or descending auctions, and the quantile function of the value distribution in second-price or ascending auctions, with a known number of bidders with symmetric independent private values. Specifically, we provide finite-sample, nonparametric, tuning parameter-free, uniform confidence bands for these quantile functions when observing only the transaction price. We also show how these…

Proximal causal learning uses the treatment-inducing proxy and the outcome-inducing proxy through the outcome bridge and the treatment bridge to provide a way to address unobserved confounding in observational studies. This paper studies simultaneous inference for the marginal counterfactual distribution and quantile treatment effect under weak proxies. First, we propose a measure of weak-proxy strength and tightens the population-bias bound for the counterfactual CDF…

Many structural and dynamic economic models imply that key parameters are identified by conditional quantile restrictions. Building on the exponential-weighting approach of Bierens (1990) and recent advances in penalized maximum statistics for conditional moment restrictions (Chen et al., 2025), we develop a unified inference framework for such parameters. We propose an adaptive $\ell_1$-penalized supremum statistic that transforms the conditional restriction into a…

High-dimensional quantile regressions are powerful tools for capturing the diverse relationships between predictors and response variables across different quantile levels. However, existing feature screening methods for quantile regressions often rely on restrictive model assumptions, limiting their applicability in complex data settings. In this paper, we propose a novel model-free feature screening framework for high-dimensional quantile regressions, leveraging a novel…

This paper studies quantile treatment and spillover effects in network experiments. Average spillover effects reveal how treating a unit's neighbors affects its outcome on average, but mask the heterogeneity of these effects across the outcome distribution. We define structural quantile effects that compare outcome quantiles between exposure states, characterizing how own treatment and exposure to treated neighbors affect different parts of the outcome distribution. Building…

Binscatters are a powerful tool for empirical work in the social, behavioral, and biomedical sciences. Available tools rely on least squares estimation of the conditional mean. We introduce novel binscatter methods based on nonlinear, possibly nonsmooth M-estimation, covering generalized linear, robust, and quantile regression models. We provide theoretical results and practical tools, including optimal bin selection, confidence bands, and statistical tests regarding…
