Let P be a class of independent populations each having an underlying multivariate normal distribution with unknown mean vector. Independent vector samples of common size n are drawn from each population in P. We say that a subset G of P is δ*-Pareto-optimal (in P) if no other population in P has the property that each component of its mean vector is larger by at least δ* ≥ 0 than the corresponding component of the mean vector of any given population in G. This article treats the problem of devising and evaluating strategies for selecting the (unique) subset G of P that is δ*-Pareto-optimal. We note that the set G as defined above is unique, nonempty, always exists, and may turn out to be the whole class P. Procedures devised to select the δ*-Pareto-optimal subset of populations are evaluated by means of loss functions that penalize the practitioner for the incorrect exclusion (inclusion) of populations that belong (do not belong) to the set G of δ*-Pareto-optimal populations. Minimax and Bayes procedures in this framework are discussed.

We study the fundamental limits of convex-regularized estimation in high-dimensional linear regression with right-rotationally invariant design matrices. We show that the asymptotic risks of convex-penalized least squares estimators are lower bounded by the risk of an approximate message passing algorithm known as Bayes VAMP, and we further characterize when the lower bound is attainable. As a technical ingredient in the proof of our lower bound theorem, we characterize the…

Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) replaces intractable likelihood evaluations with comparisons between observed and simulated data. We develop a measure-theoretic formulation of discrepancy-based Bayesian inference in which compatibility is encoded through nonnegative weights. For vanishing thresholds, we establish convergence of the corresponding posterior distributions in total variation. In the large-sample regime, we identify conditions under which the posterior…

Algorithms are increasingly being used to help automate and improve data-driven decisions, but care must be taken to prevent such algorithms from learning discriminatory patterns from historical data and perpetuating their biases. Statistical notions of fairness aim to mitigate either a model's disparate impact on disadvantaged groups (thus ensuring group fairness) or the resulting disparate treatment of individuals with similar features (thus ensuring individual fairness).…

Small area estimation (SAE) often requires both borrowing information across areas and benchmarking estimates to reliable aggregates. We develop a Bayesian framework that addresses these two objectives jointly through a new family of Benchmarking priors. The priors are induced by a benchmark-constrained regularization problem. The resulting family includes a Benchmarking Prior that incorporates the benchmarking restrictions without additional regularization across areas, and…

Spectral methods are central to high-dimensional statistics and machine learning, underlying procedures for covariance estimation, matrix denoising, representation learning, clustering, and latent variable modeling. In this work, we focus primarily on spectral estimators for high-dimensional factor models, where leading singular vectors of the data matrix are used to estimate latent structure and covariance parameters. In many modern applications, however, data are collected…

Regularization methods such as the Lasso combine shrinkage and variable selection, but strong penalization drives their solutions toward the null model. We introduce Fractional Ridge (Fridge) regression, a penalized regression method that instead shrinks toward models of a prespecified target size. Its penalty vanishes whenever the number of nonzero coefficients does not exceed that target. This behavior connects continuous shrinkage with best subset selection. We develop an…
