In this paper we investigate panel regression models with interactive fixed effects. We propose two new estimation methods that are based on minimizing convex objective functions. The first method minimizes the sum of squared residuals with a nuclear (trace) norm regularization. The second method minimizes the nuclear norm of the residuals. We establish the consistency of the two resulting estimators. Those estimators have a very important computational advantage compared to the existing least squares (LS) estimator, in that they are defined as minimizers of a convex objective function. In addition, the nuclear norm penalization helps to resolve a potential identification problem for interactive fixed effect models, in particular when the regressors are low-rank and the number of the factors is unknown. We also show how to construct estimators that are asymptotically equivalent to the least squares (LS) estimator in Bai(2009) and Moo(2017) by using our nuclear norm regularized or minimized estimators as initial values for a finite number of LS minimizing iteration steps. This iteration avoids any non-convex minimization, while the original LS estimation problem is generally non-convex, and can have multiple local minima.
交互固定效应面板中潜在组结构的收缩估计与识别
This paper provides a framework for joint shrinkage estimation and identification of latent group structures in panel data models with interactive fixed effects and large number of explanatory variables. The latent structure of the model allows individuals to be classified into a number of groups where the number of groups and/or each individual’s group identity are unknown. A doubly penalized principal component estimation procedure using a pairwise fusion penalty and an…
因果面板数据模型的矩阵补全方法
In this paper we study methods for estimating causal effects in settings with panel data, where some units are exposed to a treatment during some periods and the goal is estimating counterfactual (untreated) outcomes for the treated unit/period combinations. We propose a class of matrix completion estimators that uses the observed elements of the matrix of control outcomes corresponding to untreated unit/periods to impute the "missing" elements of the control outcome matrix,…
高维面板数据模型的稳健估计与推断
This paper provides the relevant literature with a complete toolkit for conducting robust estimation and inference about the parameters of interest involved in a high-dimensional panel data framework. Specifically, (1) we allow for non-Gaussian, serially and cross-sectionally correlated and heteroskedastic error processes, (2) we develop an estimation method for the high-dimensional long-run covariance matrix using a thresholded estimator, (3) we also allow for the number of…
非线性面板数据模型的低秩估计
This paper investigates nonlinear panel models with interactive fixed effects and introduces a general framework for parameter estimation under potentially nonconvex objective functions. We propose a computationally feasible two-step estimation procedure. In the first step, nuclear-norm regularization (NNR) is used to obtain preliminary estimators of the coefficients of interest, factors, and factor loadings. The second step involves an iterative procedure for post-NNR…
含交互固定效应的非线性面板模型的可计算估计
Interactive fixed effects are routinely controlled for in linear panel models. While an analogous fixed effects (FE) estimator for nonlinear models has been available in the literature (Chen, Fernandez-Val and Weidner, 2021), it sees much more limited use in applied research because its implementation involves solving a high-dimensional non-convex problem. In this paper, we complement the theoretical analysis of Chen, Fernandez-Val and Weidner (2021) by providing a new…
含交互固定效应的高维离散选择模型及其因果推断应用
ABSTRACT We propose a two‐step procedure to estimate a high dimensional discrete choice panel with interactive fixed effects where the initial and final estimators are obtained via a nuclear‐norm regularized (NNR) maximum likelihood estimation and post‐NNR iterated estimation, respectively. We apply the method to make counterfactual predictions of choice probabilities. Simulations demonstrate nice finite sample performance in estimation and tests. An illustrative application…
