Summary Global developments play an important role for domestic inflation rates. Earlier literature has found that a substantial amount of the variation in a large set of national inflation rates can be explained by a single global factor. However, inflation volatility has been typically neglected, although it is clearly relevant both from a policy point of view and for structural analysis and forecasting. We study the evolution of inflation rates in several countries, using a novel model that allows for commonality in both levels and volatilities, in addition to country‐specific components. We find that inflation volatility is indeed important, and a substantial fraction of it can be attributed to a global factor that is also driving inflation levels and their persistence. The extent of commonality among core inflation rates and volatilities is substantially smaller than for overall inflation, which leaves scope for national monetary policies. Finally, we show that the point and density forecasting performance of the model is good relative to standard benchmarks, which provides additional evidence on its reliability.

The paper develops a theory for selecting the rolling window when generating out-of-sample forecasts with factor-augmented regression (FAR) models in the presence of structural instabilities. It shows how to select a rolling window by minimizing the conditional mean squared forecast error (MSFE) while accounting for uncertainty in factor estimation. Because the conditional MSFE is unobserved and the factors are latent, this paper proposes a feasible version of the criterion…

This paper develops prediction models for population-level survival curves observed over time and sampled from a heterogeneous mix of populations. We consider a discrete-time setting where each curve is only partially observed and forecasts of the remaining trajectory are needed for downstream decision making. Our approach recasts cross-population heterogeneity into a multivariate sampling model. We propose two forecasting models for partially observed curves: a full factor…
从旋转不变性到标量不变性:提升得分驱动因子模型的可识别性
We show that, for a certain class of scaling matrices including the inverse square-root of the conditional Fisher information, score-driven factor models are identifiable up to a multiplicative scalar constant under very mild restrictions. This result has no analogue in parameter-driven models, as it exploits the different structure of the score-driven factor dynamics. Consequently, score-driven factor models overcome the issue of rotational invariance that typically affects…

This paper proposes a vector autoregression augmented with nonlinear factors that are modeled nonparametrically using regression trees. There are four main advantages of our model. First, modeling potential nonlinearities nonparametrically lessens the risk of misspecification. Second, the use of factor methods ensures that departures from linearity are modeled parsimoniously. In particular, they exhibit functional pooling where a small number of nonlinear factors are used to…
函数型时间序列的近似因子模型
We propose a novel approximate factor model tailored for analyzing time-dependent curve data. Our model decomposes such data into two distinct components: a low-dimensional predictable factor component and an unpredictable error term. These components are identified through the autocovariance structure of the underlying functional time series. The model parameters are consistently estimated using the eigencomponents of a cumulative autocovariance operator and an information…
