This paper considers various tests of the unit root hypothesis in panels where the cross-section dependence is due to common dynamic factors. Three situations are studied. First, the common factors and idiosyncratic components may both be nonstationary. In this case test statistics based on generalized least squares (GLS) possess a standard normal limiting distribution, whereas test statistics based on ordinary least squares (OLS) are invalid. Second, if the common component is I(1) and the idiosyncratic component is stationary (the case of cross-unit cointegration), then both the OLS and the GLS statistics fail. Finally, if the idiosyncratic components are I(1) but the common factors are stationary, then the OLS-based test statistics are severely biased, whereas the GLS-based test statistics are asymptotically valid in this situation. A Monte Carlo study is conducted to verify the asymptotic results. The research for this paper was carried out within research project “Unit roots and cointegration in panel data” financed by the German Research Association (DFG). We thank Paulo Rodrigues and two anonymous referees for helpful comments and suggestions.
重审产出收敛争论:面板数据模型分析新进展的启示
This paper provides a critical examination of the empirical basis of the output convergence debate in the light of recent developments in the analysis of dynamic heterogeneous panels with interactive effects. It shows that popular tools such as Barro's cross-country regressions and two-way fixed effects (TWFE) estimators that assume parallel trends and homogeneous dynamics lead to substantial under-estimation of the speed of convergence and misleading inference. Instead,…

This paper considers testing for unit roots in Gaussian panels with cross-sectional dependence generated by common factors. Within our setup, we can analyze restricted versions of the two prevalent approaches in the literature, that of Moon and Perron (2004, Journal of Econometrics 122, 81–126), who specify a factor model for the innovations, and the PANIC setup proposed in Bai and Ng (2004, Econometrica 72, 1127–1177), who test common factors and idiosyncratic deviations…

Spurious regression analysis in panel data when the time series are cross-section dependent is analyzed in the article. The set-up includes (possibly unknown) multiple structural breaks that can affect both the deterministic and the common factor components. We show that consistent estimation of the long-run average parameter is possible once cross-section dependence is controlled using cross-section averages in the spirit of Pesaran's common correlated effects approach. This…

The left-tailed unit-root tests of the panel analysis of nonstationarity in idiosyncratic and common components (PANIC) proposed by Bai and Ng (2004, Econometrica 72, 1127–1177) have standard local asymptotic power. We assess the size and power properties of the right-tailed version of the PANIC tests when the common and/or the idiosyncratic components are moderately explosive. We find that, when an idiosyncratic component is moderately explosive, the tests for the common…

PANIC面板单位根检验的功效
The current paper considers the asymptotic local power of second-generation panel unit root tests that are robust to the presence of cross-section dependence in the form of common factors. As a basis for our analysis, we take the PANIC approach of Bai and Ng (2004, 2010), which is one of the single most popular and general second-generation approaches around.
