We develop a model-agnostic framework for noise reduction in high-dimensional time series that explicitly targets optimal recovery of a low-dimensional latent dynamic component contaminated by observational white noise. Under the assumption that the latent dynamics live in a low-dimensional linear dynamic subspace, we characterize the optimal linear projection onto the dynamic subspace and provide a geometric description of the residual error in terms of the relative orientation of the signal and noise spaces. We propose estimators for the dynamic subspace and the optimal projection based on lagged covariance matrices, bootstrap dimension selection, and a low-rank representation of the structured noise. Under mild conditions, the resulting denoised series is shown to converge to its population target at the usual parametric rate. Simulations show that the proposed method can substantially improve subspace estimation, reconstruction error, and one-step-ahead forecast accuracy compared with both orthogonal projection-based denoising and the raw data. The approach is illustrated by empirical applications to high-dimensional stock returns and to a 20-variate time series of macroeconomic indicators.
This paper presents WIRED, an R package algorithm for joint probabilistic forecasting of multiple related time series. WIRED combines a library of simple marginal predictive distributions, CRPS-based adaptive mixture weights, and a Gaussian or Student t copula for cross-series simulation. We evaluate the implementation in a benchmark with four synthetic data-generating processes (DGPs), three forecast horizons, 30 replicates per DGP-horizon pair, nine ablations and external…
Macroeconomic nowcasting sits at the intersection of traditional econometrics, data-rich information systems, and AI applications in business, economics, and policy. Machine learning (ML) methods are increasingly used to nowcast quarterly GDP growth, but adoption in high-stakes settings requires that predictive accuracy be matched by interpretability and robust uncertainty quantification. This article reviews recent developments in macroeconomic nowcasting and compares…
We put forward a simple new randomized missing data (RMD) approach to robust filtering of state-space models, motivated by the idea that the inclusion of only a small fraction of available highly precise measurements can still extract most of the attainable efficiency gains for filtering latent states, estimating model parameters, and producing out-of-sample forecasts. In our general RMD framework we develop two alternative implementations: endogenous (RMD-N) and exogenous…
In this research, a functional time series model was introduced to predict future realizations of river flow time series. The proposed model was constructed based on a functional time series's correlated lags and the essential exogenous climate variables. Rainfall, temperature, and evaporation variables were hypothesized to have substantial functionality in river flow simulation. Because an actual time series model is unspecified and the input variables' significance for the…
In statistics, forecast uncertainty is often quantified using a specified statistical model, though such approaches may be vulnerable to model misspecification, selection bias, and limited finite-sample validity. While bootstrapping can potentially mitigate some of these concerns, it is often computationally demanding. Instead, we take a model-agnostic and distribution-free approach, namely conformal prediction, to construct prediction intervals in high-dimensional…
In this paper, we propose Random Forests by Random Weights (RF-RW), a theoretically grounded and practically effective alternative RF modelling for nonlinear time series data, where existing RF-based approaches struggle to adequately capture temporal dependence. RF-RW reconciles the strengths of classic RF with the temporal dependence inherent in time series forecasting. Specifically, it avoids the bootstrap resampling procedure, therefore preserves the serial dependence…
