$\ell^2$ Inference for Change Points in High-Dimensional Time Series via a Two-Way MOSUM

We propose an inference method for detecting multiple change points in high-dimensional time series, targeting dense or spatially clustered signals. Our method aggregates moving sum (MOSUM) statistics cross-sectionally by an $\ell^2$-norm and maximizes them over time. We further introduce a novel Two-Way MOSUM, which utilizes spatial-temporal moving regions to search for breaks, with the added advantage of enhancing testing power when breaks occur in only a few groups. The…

Matrix Quantile Factor Model

This paper introduces a matrix quantile factor model for matrix-valued data with low-rank structure. We estimate the row and column factor spaces via minimizing the empirical check loss function with orthogonal rotation constraints. We show that the estimates converge at rate $(\min\{p_1p_2,p_2T,p_1T\})^{-1/2}$ in the average Frobenius norm, where $p_1$, $p_2$ and $T$ are the row dimensionality, column dimensionality and length of the matrix sequence, respectively. This rate…

Detecting frequency modulation in stochastic time series data

We propose a new statistical test to identify non-stationary frequency-modulated stochastic processes from time series data. Our method uses the instantaneous phase as a discriminatory statistics with reliable critical values derived from surrogate data. We simulated an oscillatory second-order autoregressive process to evaluate the size and power of the test. We found that the test we propose is able to correctly identify more than 99% of non-stationary data when the…

Assessing the causal effects of a stochastic intervention in time series data: Are heat alerts effective in preventing deaths and hospitalizations?

The methodological development of this paper is motivated by the need to address the following scientific question: does the issuance of heat alerts prevent adverse health effects? Our goal is to address this question within a causal inference framework in the context of time series data. A key challenge is that causal inference methods require the overlap assumption to hold: each unit (i.e., a day) must have a positive probability of receiving the treatment (i.e., issuing a…

Feature-based intermittent demand forecast combinations: bias, accuracy and inventory implications

Intermittent demand forecasting is a ubiquitous and challenging problem in production systems and supply chain management. In recent years, there has been a growing focus on developing forecasting approaches for intermittent demand from academic and practical perspectives. However, limited attention has been given to forecast combination methods, which have achieved competitive performance in forecasting fast-moving time series. The current study aims to examine the…

L2-Relaxation: With Applications to Forecast Combination and Portfolio Analysis

This paper tackles forecast combination with many forecasts or minimum variance portfolio selection with many assets. A novel convex problem called L2-relaxation is proposed. In contrast to standard formulations, L2-relaxation minimizes the squared Euclidean norm of the weight vector subject to a set of relaxed linear inequality constraints. The magnitude of relaxation, controlled by a tuning parameter, balances the bias and variance. When the variance-covariance (VC) matrix…
