Partial Identification of Marginal Treatment Effects with discrete instruments and misreported treatment

离散工具变量与处理误报下边际处理效应的部分识别

This paper provides partial identification results for the marginal treatment effect ($MTE$) when the binary treatment variable is potentially misreported and the instrumental variable is discrete. Identification results are derived under different sets of nonparametric assumptions. The identification results are illustrated in identifying the marginal treatment effects of food stamps on health.

2D score based estimation of heterogeneous treatment effects

基于二维得分的异质性处理效应估计

Statisticians show growing interest in estimating and analyzing heterogeneity in causal effects in observational studies. However, there usually exists a trade-off between accuracy and interpretability for developing a desirable estimator for treatment effects, especially in the case when there are a large number of features in estimation. To make efforts to address the issue, we propose a score-based framework for estimating the Conditional Average Treatment Effect (CATE)…

Estimation and Inference of Extremal Quantile Treatment Effects for Heavy-Tailed Distributions

重尾分布极端分位数处理效应的估计与推断

Causal inference for extreme events has many potential applications in fields such as climate science, medicine and economics. We study the extremal quantile treatment effect of a binary treatment on a continuous, heavy-tailed outcome. Existing methods are limited to the case where the quantile of interest is within the range of the observations. For applications in risk assessment, however, the most relevant cases relate to extremal quantiles that go beyond the data range.…

Improving the mixed model for repeated measures to robustly increase precision in randomized trials

改进重复测量混合模型以稳健提高随机试验精度

In randomized trials, repeated measures of the outcome are routinely collected. The mixed model for repeated measures (MMRM) leverages the information from these repeated outcome measures, and is often used for the primary analysis to estimate the average treatment effect at the primary endpoint. MMRM, however, can suffer from bias and precision loss when it models intermediate outcomes incorrectly, and hence fails to use the post-randomization information harmlessly. This…

Location-Adaptive Change-Point Testing for Time Series

时间序列的位置自适应变点检验

We propose a location-adaptive self-normalization (SN) based test for change points in time series. The SN technique has been extensively used in change-point detection for its capability to avoid direct estimation of nuisance parameters. However, we find that the power of the SN-based test is susceptible to the location of the break and may suffer from a severe power loss, especially when the change occurs at the early or late stage of the sequence. This phenomenon is…

A Primer on Deep Learning for Causal Inference

因果推断中的深度学习入门

This review systematizes the emerging literature for causal inference using deep neural networks under the potential outcomes framework. It provides an intuitive introduction on how deep learning can be used to estimate/predict heterogeneous treatment effects and extend causal inference to settings where confounding is non-linear, time varying, or encoded in text, networks, and images. To maximize accessibility, we also introduce prerequisite concepts from causal inference…

Adjusting for indirectly measured confounding using large-scale propensity scores

利用大规模倾向得分调整间接测量的混杂

Confounding remains one of the major challenges to causal inference with observational data. This problem is paramount in medicine, where we would like to answer causal questions from large observational datasets like electronic health records (EHRs) and administrative claims. Modern medical data typically contain tens of thousands of covariates. Such a large set carries hope that many of the confounders are directly measured, and further hope that others are indirectly…

Regime-Switching Density Forecasts Using Economists' Scenarios

利用经济学家情景进行状态转换密度预测

We propose an approach for generating macroeconomic density forecasts that incorporate information on multiple scenarios defined by experts. We adopt a regime-switching framework in which sets of scenarios ("views") are used as Bayesian priors on economic regimes. Predictive densities coming from different views are then combined by optimizing objective functions of density forecasting. We illustrate the approach with an empirical application to quarterly real-time forecasts…

CP Factor Model for Dynamic Tensors

动态张量的 CP 因子模型

Observations in various applications are frequently represented as a time series of multidimensional arrays, called tensor time series, preserving the inherent multidimensional structure. In this paper, we present a factor model approach, in a form similar to tensor CP decomposition, to the analysis of high-dimensional dynamic tensor time series. As the loading vectors are uniquely defined but not necessarily orthogonal, it is significantly different from the existing tensor…

Covariate Adjustment in Regression Discontinuity Designs

断点回归设计中的协变量调整

The Regression Discontinuity (RD) design is a widely used non-experimental method for causal inference and program evaluation. While its canonical formulation only requires a score and an outcome variable, it is common in empirical work to encounter RD analyses where additional variables are used for adjustment. This practice has led to misconceptions about the role of covariate adjustment in RD analysis, from both methodological and empirical perspectives. In this chapter,…

Inverse Probability Weighting-based Mediation Analysis for Microbiome Data

Motivation: Mediation analysis is an important tool for elucidating causal mechanisms in biomedical research and has recently gained increasing attention in microbiome studies. Motivated by a microbiome study of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, we investigate whether the effect of induction chemotherapy intensity on infection status is mediated through gut microbial taxa. This problem poses substantial methodological challenges due to the high dimensionality, zero…

Identification and Estimation in a Time-Varying Endogenous Random Coefficient Panel Data Model

时变内生随机系数面板模型的识别与估计

This paper proposes a correlated random coefficient linear panel data model, where regressors can be correlated with time-varying and individual-specific random coefficients through both a fixed effect and a time-varying random shock. I develop a new panel data-based method to identify the average partial effect and the local average response function. The identification strategy employs a sufficient statistic to control for the fixed effect and a control variable for the…

Data-driven Smooth Tests for Normality in ANOVA When the Number of Groups is Large

组数较大时方差分析正态性的数据驱动光滑检验

The normality assumption for random errors is fundamental in the analysis of variance (ANOVA) models. However, it is rarely subjected to formal testing in practice, and theoretically justified procedures are largely unavailable, especially when the number of groups diverges. In this paper, we develop Neyman's smooth tests for assessing normality in a broad class of ANOVA models, allowing the number of groups to diverge. The proposed test statistics are constructed via the…

Investigating Growth at Risk Using a Multi-country Non-parametric Quantile Factor Model

用多国非参数分位数因子模型研究增长风险

We develop a Bayesian non-parametric quantile panel regression model. Within each quantile, the response function is a convex combination of a linear model and a non-linear function, which we approximate using Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART). Cross-sectional information at the pth quantile is captured through a conditionally heteroscedastic latent factor. The non-parametric feature of our model enhances flexibility, while the panel feature, by exploiting…

Probabilistic Prediction for Binary Treatment Choice: with focus on personalized medicine

二元治疗选择中的概率预测:聚焦个体化医疗

This paper extends my research applying statistical decision theory to treatment choice with sample data, using maximum regret to evaluate the performance of treatment rules. The specific new contribution is to study as-if optimization using estimates of illness probabilities in clinical choice between surveillance and aggressive treatment. Beyond its specifics, the paper sends a broad message. Statisticians and computer scientists have addressed conditional prediction for…

Robust Generalized Method of Moments: A Finite Sample Viewpoint

稳健广义矩估计:有限样本视角

For many inference problems in statistics and econometrics, the unknown parameter is identified by a set of moment conditions. A generic method of solving moment conditions is the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). However, classical GMM estimation is potentially very sensitive to outliers. Robustified GMM estimators have been developed in the past, but suffer from several drawbacks: computational intractability, poor dimension-dependence, and no quantitative recovery…

Edgeworth expansions for volatility models

波动率模型的 Edgeworth 展开

Motivated from option and derivative pricing, this note develops Edgeworth expansions both in the Kolmogorov and Wasserstein metric for many different types of discrete time volatility models and their possible transformations. This includes, among others, Hölder-type functions of (augmented) Garch processes of any order, iterated random functions or Volterra-processes.

Effect or Treatment Heterogeneity? Policy Evaluation with Aggregated and Disaggregated Treatments

效应异质性还是处理异质性?聚合与细分处理的政策评估

Binary treatments are often ex-post aggregates of multiple treatments or can be disaggregated into multiple treatment versions. Thus, effects can be heterogeneous due to either effect or treatment heterogeneity. We propose a decomposition method that uncovers masked heterogeneity, avoids spurious discoveries, and evaluates treatment assignment quality. The estimation and inference procedure based on double/debiased machine learning allows for high-dimensional confounding,…

Estimating High Dimensional Monotone Index Models by Iterative Convex Optimization1

通过迭代凸优化估计高维单调指数模型

In this paper we propose new approaches to estimating large dimensional monotone index models. This class of models has been popular in the applied and theoretical econometrics literatures as it includes discrete choice, nonparametric transformation, and duration models. A main advantage of our approach is computational. For instance, rank estimation procedures such as those proposed in Han (1987) and Cavanagh and Sherman (1998) that optimize a nonsmooth, non convex…

Testing and Estimating Structural Breaks in Time Series and Panel Data in Stata

在 Stata 中检验和估计时间序列与面板数据的结构突变

Identifying structural change is a crucial step in analysis of time series and panel data. The longer the time span, the higher the likelihood that the model parameters have changed as a result of major disruptive events, such as the 2007--2008 financial crisis and the 2020 COVID--19 outbreak. Detecting the existence of breaks, and dating them is therefore necessary, not only for estimation purposes but also for understanding drivers of change and their effect on…

Fast and Robust Online Inference with Stochastic Gradient Descent via Random Scaling

通过随机缩放实现随机梯度下降的快速稳健在线推断

We develop a new method of online inference for a vector of parameters estimated by the Polyak-Ruppert averaging procedure of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithms. We leverage insights from time series regression in econometrics and construct asymptotically pivotal statistics via random scaling. Our approach is fully operational with online data and is rigorously underpinned by a functional central limit theorem. Our proposed inference method has a couple of key…

Sufficient Representations for Categorical Variables

类别变量的充分表示

Many learning algorithms require categorical data to be transformed into real vectors before it can be used as input. Often, categorical variables are encoded as one-hot (or dummy) vectors. However, this mode of representation can be wasteful since it adds many low-signal regressors, especially when the number of unique categories is large. In this paper, we investigate simple alternative solutions for universally consistent estimators that rely on lower-dimensional…

Inference with Many Weak Instruments

大量弱工具变量下的统计推断

We develop a concept of weak identification in linear IV models in which the number of instruments can grow at the same rate or slower than the sample size. We propose a jackknifed version of the classical weak identification-robust Anderson-Rubin (AR) test statistic. Large-sample inference based on the jackknifed AR is valid under heteroscedasticity and weak identification. The feasible version of this statistic uses a novel variance estimator. The test has uniformly…
