Distribution-Free Prediction Bands for Multivariate Functional Time Series: an Application to the Italian Gas Market

Uncertainty quantification in forecasting represents a topic of great importance in energy trading, as understanding the status of the energy market would enable traders to directly evaluate the impact of their own offers/bids. To this end, we propose a scalable procedure that outputs closed-form simultaneous prediction bands for multivariate functional response variables in a time series setting, which is able to guarantee performance bounds in terms of unconditional…

Test for independence of long-range dependent time series using distance covariance

We apply the concept of distance covariance for testing independence of two long-range dependent time series. As test statistic we propose a linear combination of empirical distance cross-covariances. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic, and we show consistency against a very general class of alternatives. The asymptotic theory developed in this paper is based on a novel non-central limit theorem for stochastic processes with values in an $L^2$-Hilbert…

Causality indices for bivariate time series data: a comparative review of performance

Inferring nonlinear and asymmetric causal relationships between multivariate longitudinal data is a challenging task with wide-ranging application areas including clinical medicine, mathematical biology, economics and environmental research. A number of methods for inferring causal relationships within complex dynamic and stochastic systems have been proposed but there is not a unified consistent definition of causality in this context. We evaluate the performance of ten…

Adaptive Sequential Design for a Single Time-Series

The current work is motivated by the need for robust statistical methods for precision medicine; as such, we address the need for statistical methods that provide actionable inference for a single unit at any point in time. We aim to learn an optimal, unknown choice of the controlled components of the design in order to optimize the expected outcome; with that, we adapt the randomization mechanism for future time-point experiments based on the data collected on the…

Normal Inverse Gaussian Autoregressive Model Using EM Algorithm

In this article, normal inverse Gaussian (NIG) autoregressive model is introduced. The parameters of the model are estimated using Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. The efficacy of the EM algorithm is shown using simulated and real world financial data. It is shown that NIG autoregressive model fit very well the considered financial data and hence could be useful in modeling of various real life time-series data.

Modeling Macroeconomic Variations After COVID-19

The coronavirus is a global event of historical proportions and just a few months changed the time series properties of the data in ways that make many pre-covid forecasting models inadequate. It also creates a new problem for estimation of economic factors and dynamic causal effects because the variations around the outbreak can be interpreted as outliers, as shifts to the distribution of existing shocks, or as addition of new shocks. I take the latter view and use covid…
