Sequentially valid inference for probabilistic inflation forecasts

Traditional statistical tests are poorly suited for the sequential evaluation of probabilistic forecast calibration. We address this limitation in macroeconomic forecasting by applying a new sequential testing method based on e-values. The e-value-based methodology enables anytime-valid inference. It allows practitioners to test against calibration continuously without invalidating statistical guarantees. To illustrate the framework's practical value, we apply it to…

Graph-dependent shrinkage priors for Bayesian trend filtering

Many common data dependencies can be characterized by graphs: time series data are sequential (chain graph), images appear as pixels (lattice graph), areal data are defined by neighboring units (spatial adjacency graph), etc. Graph trend filtering seeks to smooth and predict such data. However, classical trend filtering only incorporates the graph for estimation of the trend, which limits its adaptivity, and is brittle in the presence of missing data. Further, it lacks…

Principal Component Analysis for a Mix of Stationary and Nonstationary Variables

This paper develops a procedure for uncovering the common cyclical factors that drive a mix of stationary and nonstationary variables. The method does not require knowing which variables are nonstationary or the nature of the nonstationarity. An application to the FRED-MD macroeconomic dataset demonstrates that the approach offers similar benefits to those of traditional principal component analysis with some added advantages.

Spectral Change Point Estimation for High Dimensional Time Series by Sparse Tensor Decomposition

Multivariate time series may be subject to partial structural changes over certain frequency band, for instance, in neuroscience. We study the change point detection problem with high dimensional time series, within the framework of frequency domain. The overarching goal is to locate all change points and delineate which series are activated by the change, over which frequencies. In practice, the number of activated series per change and frequency could span from a few to…

Adaptive Change Point Detection with Matrix Time Series: Leveraging Structured Mean Shifts

In high-dimensional time series, the component processes are often assembled into a matrix to display their interrelationship. We focus on detecting mean shifts with unknown change point locations in these matrix time series. Series that are activated by a change may cluster along certain rows (columns), which forms mode-specific change point alignment. Leveraging mode-specific change point alignments may substantially enhance the power for change point detection. Yet, there…

Estimation of time series by Maximum Mean Discrepancy

We define two minimum distance estimators for dependent data by minimizing some approximated Maximum Mean Discrepancy distances between the true empirical distribution of observations and their assumed (parametric) model distribution. When the latter one is intractable, it is approximated by simulation, allowing to accommodate most dynamic processes with latent variables. We derive the non-asymptotic and the large sample properties of our estimators in the context of…
