Linear Regression from 1-bit Quantized Data

Motivated by the prevalence of environments in which data is abundant while resources for storage and/or transmission might be scarce, we study linear regression when predictors, their squares, and responses are subject to single-bit dithered quantization. An estimator relying on plug-in estimation of the quadratic and linear terms in the quadratic program formulation of the least squares problem is proposed. We provide a non-asymptotic bound on the $\ell_2$-estimation error…

The Conjugate Domain Dichotomy: Exact Risk of M-Estimators under Infinite-Variance Noise in High Dimensions

This paper studies high-dimensional M-estimation in the proportional asymptotic regime (p/n -> gamma > 0) when the noise distribution has infinite variance. For noise with regularly-varying tails of index alpha in (1,2), we establish that the asymptotic behavior of a regularized M-estimator is governed by a single geometric property of the loss function: the boundedness of the domain of its Fenchel conjugate. When this conjugate domain is bounded -- as is the case for the…

Identifying the desert decision rule to assess and achieve fairness

We study fairness in decision-making when the data may encode systematic bias. Existing approaches typically impose fairness constraints while predicting the observed decision, which may itself be unfair. We propose a novel framework for characterising and addressing fairness issues by introducing the notion of desert decision, a latent variable representing the decision an individual rightfully deserves based on their actions, efforts, or abilities. This formulation shifts…

Likelihood-Free Inference via Structured Score Matching

In many statistical problems, the data distribution is specified through a generative process for which the likelihood function is analytically intractable, yet inference on the associated model parameters remains of primary interest. We develop a likelihood-free inference framework that combines score matching with gradient-based optimization and bootstrap procedures to facilitate parameter estimation together with uncertainty quantification. The proposed methodology…

Parametric generalized spectrum for heavy-tailed time series

Recently, several spectra have emerged, designed to encapsulate the distributional characteristics of non-Gaussian stationary processes. This article introduces parametric families of generalized spectra based on the characteristic function, alongside inference procedures enabling $\sqrt{n}$-consistent estimation of the unknown parameters in a broad class of parametric models. These spectra capture non-linear dependencies without requiring that the underlying stochastic…

Statistical Models for the Inference of Within-person Relations: A Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model and Its Interpretation

The cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) has been widely used, particularly in psychology, to infer longitudinal relations among variables. At the same time, controlling for between-person heterogeneity and capturing within-person relations as processes of within-person change are regarded as key components to causal inference based on longitudinal data. Since Hamaker, Kuiper, and Grasman (2015) criticized the CLPM for its limitations in inferring within-person relations, the…

A Unified Framework for Nonlinear Mediation Analysis of Random Objects

Mediation analysis for complex, non-Euclidean data, such as probability distributions, compositions, images, and networks, presents significant methodological challenges due to the inherent nonlinearity and geometric constraints of such spaces. Existing approaches are often restricted to Euclidean settings or specific data types. We propose Random Object Mediation Analysis (ROMA), a unified framework that simultaneously accommodates object-valued exposures, mediators, and…

Counterfactual Density Effects and the German East--West Income Gap

We propose a novel framework for conducting causal inference based on counterfactual densities. While the current paradigm of causal inference is mostly focused on estimating average treatment effects (ATEs), which restricts the analysis to the first moment of the outcome variable, our density-based approach is able to detect causal effects based on general distributional characteristics. Following the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition approach, we consider two types of…

Interpretable models for forecasting high-dimensional functional time series

We study the modeling and forecasting of high-dimensional functional time series, which can be temporally dependent and cross-sectionally correlated. Central to our implementation is a functional analysis of variance by decomposing high-dimensional functional time series, such as subnational age- and sex-specific mortality observed over years, into two distinct components: a deterministic mean structure and a residual process varying over time. Unlike purely statistical…

Identifying Genetic Variants for Obesity: A Knowledge Integration Quantile Regression (KIQR) Approach for Ultra-High-Dimensional Data

Obesity is widely recognized as a serious and pervasive health concern. We study obesity through body mass index (BMI), which is known to be highly heritable, and identify important genetic risk factors for BMI from hundreds of thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the Framingham Study data. Several challenges arise when using traditional genome-wide association studies (GWAS): (1) They suffer from a low power due to a combination of a limited number of…

Fake Date Tests: Can We Trust In-sample Accuracy of LLMs in Macroeconomic Forecasting?

Large language models (LLMs) are a type of machine learning tool that economists have started to apply in their empirical research. One such application is macroeconomic forecasting with backtesting of LLMs, even though they are trained on the same data that is used to estimate their forecasting performance. Can these in-sample accuracy results be extrapolated to the model's out-of-sample performance? To answer this question, we developed a family of prompt sensitivity tests…

Sensitivity Analysis for Instrumental Variables Under Joint Relaxations of Monotonicity and Independence

In this paper I develop a breakdown frontier approach to assess the sensitivity of Local Average Treatment Effects (LATE) estimates to violations of monotonicity and independence of the instrument. I parametrize violations of independence using the concept of $c$-dependence from Masten & Poirier (2018) and allow for the share of defiers to be greater than zero but smaller than the share of compliers. I derive identified sets for the LATE and the Average Treatment Effect…

Inference on Optimal Policy Values and Other Irregular Functionals via Softmax Smoothing

Constructing confidence intervals for the value of an (unknown) optimal treatment policy is a fundamental problem in causal inference. Insight into the optimal policy value can guide the development of reward-maximizing, individualized treatment regimes. However, because the functional that defines the optimal value is non-differentiable, standard semi-parametric approaches for performing inference fail to be directly applicable. Many existing works circumvent…

Unbiased Estimation of Central Moments in Unbalanced Two- and Three-Level Models

This paper derives closed-form unbiased estimators of central moments in multilevel random-effects models with unbalanced group sizes. In a two-level model, we provide unbiased estimators for the second, third, and fourth central moments under both group-level and observation-level averaging. In a three-level model, we provide unbiased estimators for the second and third central moments.
