Inference in high-dimensional logistic regression under tensor network dependence

We investigate the problem of statistical inference for logistic regression with high-dimensional covariates in settings where dependence among individuals is induced by an underlying Markov random field. Going beyond the pairwise interaction models such as the Ising model, we consider a framework to accommodate more general tensor structures that capture higher-order dependencies. We develop a two-step procedure for low-dimensional linear and quadratic functionals. The…

Triple/Double-Debiased Lasso

In this paper, we propose a triple (or double-debiased) Lasso estimator for inference on a low-dimensional parameter in high-dimensional linear regression models. The estimator is based on a moment function that satisfies not only first- but also second-order Neyman orthogonality conditions, thereby eliminating both the leading bias and the second-order bias induced by regularization. We derive an asymptotic linear representation for the proposed estimator and show that its…

When are time series predictions causal? The potential system and dynamic causal effects

The potential system is a nonparametric time series model for assessing the causal impact of moving an assignment at time $t$ on an outcome at future time $t+h$, accounting for the presence of features. The potential system provides nonparametric content for, e.g., time series experiments, time series regression, local projection, impulse response functions and SVARs. It closes a gap between time series causality and nonparametric cross-sectional causal methods, and provides…

Double Machine Learning for Static Panel Data with Instrumental Variables: New Method and Applications

Panel data methods are widely used in empirical analysis to address unobserved heterogeneity, but causal inference remains challenging when treatments are endogenous and confounding variables high-dimensional and potentially nonlinear. Standard instrumental variables (IV) estimators, such as two-stage least squares (2SLS), become unreliable when instrument validity requires flexibly conditioning on many covariates with potentially non-linear effects. This paper develops a…

Estimating within-cluster and between-cluster spillover effects in randomized saturation designs

Randomized saturation designs are two-stage experiments: they first randomly assign treatment probabilities over the clusters and then randomly assign the treatment to the units within the clusters. The existing literature on randomized saturation designs focuses on estimating within-cluster spillover effects by assuming away between-cluster spillover effects. However, the units may interact across clusters in many practical randomized saturation designs. A leading example…

Invariant quantile regression for heterogeneous environments

In this paper, we propose an invariant quantile regression (IQR) framework specifically designed for multi-environment datasets, which captures the invariance across different environments. This framework is closely related to transfer learning, causal inference, and fair machine learning, and is motivated by scenarios in which the conditional probability of the response given covariates varies, while certain key variables remain invariant. This perspective differs notably…

From Cross-Validation to SURE: Asymptotic Risk of Tuned Regularized Estimators

We derive the asymptotic risk function of regularized empirical risk minimization (ERM) estimators tuned by $n$-fold cross-validation (CV). The out-of-sample prediction loss of such estimators converges in distribution to the squared-error loss (risk function) of shrinkage estimators in the normal means model, tuned by Stein's unbiased risk estimate (SURE). This risk function provides a more fine-grained picture of predictive performance than uniform bounds on worst-case…

Transfer learning for high-dimensional Factor-augmented sparse linear model

In this paper, we study transfer learning for high-dimensional factor-augmented sparse linear models, motivated by applications in economics and finance where strongly correlated predictors and latent factor structures pose major challenges for reliable estimation. Our framework simultaneously mitigates the impact of high correlation and removes the additional contributions of latent factors, thereby reducing potential model misspecification in conventional linear modeling.…

Automatic Debiased Machine Learning for Smooth Functionals of Nonparametric M-Estimands

We develop a unified framework for automatic debiased machine learning (autoDML) for inference on a broad class of statistical parameters. The framework applies to any smooth functional of a nonparametric M-estimand, defined as the minimizer of a population risk over an infinite-dimensional linear space. Examples include counterfactual regression, quantile, and survival functions, as well as conditional average treatment effects. Rather than requiring manual derivation of…

Decoupling and randomization for double-indexed permutation statistics

This paper introduces a version of decoupling and randomization to establish concentration inequalities for double-indexed permutation statistics. The results yield, among other applications, a new combinatorial Hanson-Wright inequality and a new combinatorial Bennett inequality. Several illustrative examples from rank-based statistics, graph-based statistics, and causal inference are also provided.

Central limit theory for Peaks-over-Threshold partial sums of long memory linear time series

Over the last 30 years, extensive work has been devoted to developing central limit theory for partial sums of subordinated long memory linear time series. A much less studied problem, motivated by questions that are ubiquitous in extreme value theory, is the asymptotic behavior of such partial sums when the subordination mechanism has a threshold depending on sample size, so as to focus on the right tail of the time series. This article substantially extends longstanding…

Causal Inference with Groupwise Matching

This paper examines methods of causal inference based on groupwise matching when we observe multiple large groups of individuals over several periods. We formulate causal inference validity through a generalized matching condition, generalizing the parallel trend assumption in difference-in-differences designs. We show that difference-in-differences, synthetic control, and synthetic difference-in-differences designs are distinguished by the specific matching conditions that…
