Panel data models with interactive fixed effects and (relatively) small T

交互固定效应面板数据模型与(相对)小 T

This paper studies the estimation of a linear panel data model with interactive fixed effects. A transformation is introduced which, after having been applied, renders the least squares (LS) estimator of Bai (2009) consistent and asymptotically unbiased when n is large and T is fixed. This is termed the transformed least squares (TLS) estimator. Going further, these properties are shown to also carry over to the large n, large T setting, provided T /n → 0. This contrasts…

High dimensional alpha test for linear factor pricing model with Lq-norm

高维线性因子定价模型的 Lq 范数 alpha 检验

We consider testing zero pricing errors in high-dimensional linear factor pricing models. Existing methods are mainly based on either an $L_2$ statistic, which is effective under dense alternatives, or an $L_\infty$ statistic, which is powerful under very sparse alternatives. To bridge these two regimes, we develop a class of $L_q$-based tests for finite $q$, including the practically useful $L_4$ and $L_6$ cases. We show that larger $q$ leads to greater sensitivity to…

Testing for structural changes in panel data models with interactive fixed effects via discrete Fourier transform

基于离散傅里叶变换检验交互固定效应面板模型的结构变化

We propose a discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based test for detecting structural changes in panel data models with interactive fixed effects (IFE). When structural changes are present but ignored, the conventional asymptotic distribution of the least squares (LS) estimator of Bai (2009) may no longer provide reliable inference, and the resulting residuals contain signals of parameter instability. Our test exploits this feature by comparing the DFT of weighted residuals to…

Principal component analysis for a mix of stationary and nonstationary variables

混合平稳与非平稳变量的主成分分析

This paper develops a procedure for uncovering the common cyclical factors that drive a mix of stationary and nonstationary variables. The method does not require knowing which variables are nonstationary or the nature of the nonstationarity. An application to the FRED-MD macroeconomic dataset demonstrates that the approach offers similar benefits to those of traditional principal component analysis with some added advantages.

Covariance Function Estimation for High-Dimensional Functional Time Series with Dual Factor Structures

双重因子结构下高维函数型时间序列的协方差函数估计

We propose a flexible dual functional factor model for modelling high-dimensional functional time series. In this model, a high-dimensional fully functional factor structure is imposed on the observed functional processes, whereas a low-dimensional version (via series approximation) is assumed for the latent functional factors. We extend the classic principal component analysis technique for estimating a low-rank structure to the estimation of a large covariance matrix of…

High Dimensional Threshold Factor Models with Common Stochastic Trends

具有共同随机趋势的高维门限因子模型

We study inference for threshold regression in the context of a large factor model with common stochastic trends. We develop a Least Squares estimator for the threshold level, deriving almost sure rates of convergence and proposing a novel way of constructing confidence intervals based on a randomized test. Our confidence intervals are constructed using the rates of convergence of the estimated threshold level, and no limiting distribution is required. We also develop a…

Disentangling Structural Breaks in Factor Models for Macroeconomic Data

区分宏观数据因子模型中的结构断点

We develop a projection-based decomposition to disentangle structural breaks in the factor variance and factor loadings. Our approach yields test statistics that can be compared against standard distributions commonly used in the structural break literature. Because standard methods for estimating factor models in macroeconomics normalize the factor variance, they do not distinguish between breaks of the factor variance and factor loadings. Applying our procedure to U.S.…

Matrix Quantile Factor Model

矩阵分位数因子模型

This paper introduces a matrix quantile factor model for matrix-valued data with low-rank structure. We estimate the row and column factor spaces via minimizing the empirical check loss function with orthogonal rotation constraints. We show that the estimates converge at rate (min{p1p2,p2T,p1T})−1/2 in the average Frobenius norm, where p1, p2 and T are the row dimensionality, column dimensionality and length of the matrix sequence, respectively. This rate is faster than that…

From Rotational to Scalar Invariance: Enhancing Identifiability in Score-Driven Factor Models

从旋转不变性到标量不变性:提升得分驱动因子模型的可识别性

We show that, for a certain class of scaling matrices including the inverse square-root of the conditional Fisher information, score-driven factor models are identifiable up to a multiplicative scalar constant under very mild restrictions. This result has no analogue in parameter-driven models, as it exploits the different structure of the score-driven factor dynamics. Consequently, score-driven factor models overcome the issue of rotational invariance that typically affects…

A Flexible Approach to Augmenting a Bayesian VAR with Nonlinear Factors

用非线性因子扩展贝叶斯 VAR 的灵活方法

This paper proposes a vector autoregression augmented with nonlinear factors that are modeled nonparametrically using regression trees. There are four main advantages of our model. First, modeling potential nonlinearities nonparametrically lessens the risk of misspecification. Second, the use of factor methods ensures that departures from linearity are modeled parsimoniously. In particular, they exhibit functional pooling where a small number of nonlinear factors are used to…

Approximate Factor Models for Functional Time Series

函数型时间序列的近似因子模型

We propose a novel approximate factor model tailored for analyzing time-dependent curve data. Our model decomposes such data into two distinct components: a low-dimensional predictable factor component and an unpredictable error term. These components are identified through the autocovariance structure of the underlying functional time series. The model parameters are consistently estimated using the eigencomponents of a cumulative autocovariance operator and an information…

CP-factorization for high-dimensional tensor time series and double projection iterations

高维张量时间序列的 CP 因子分解与双重投影迭代

Abstract We adopt the canonical polyadic (CP) decomposition to model high-dimensional tensor time series. Our primary goal is to identify and estimate the factor loadings in the CP decomposition. We propose a one-pass estimation procedure through standard eigen-analysis for a matrix constructed based on the serial dependence structure of the data. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimator are established under a general setting as long as the factor loading vectors…

Taxonomy and Estimation of Multiple Breakpoints in High-Dimensional Factor Models*

高维因子模型中多个结构断点的分类与估计

This paper proposes a quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) estimator for break points in high-dimensional factor models, specifically accounting for multiple structural breaks. We begin by establishing a necessary and sufficient condition to categorize two distinct types of breaks in factor loadings: singular changes and rotational changes. The analysis of the nearly singular subsample covariance matrices of the pseudo-factors plays a key role in our approach. It allows us to…

Prediction When Factors are Weak

弱因子情形下的预测

In economic forecasting, principal component analysis (PCA) has been the most prevalent approach to the recovery of factors, which summarize information in a large set of predictors. Nevertheless, the theoretical justification of this approach often relies on a convenient and critical assumption that factors are pervasive. To incorporate information from weaker factors, we propose a new prediction procedure based on supervised PCA, which iterates over selection, PCA, and…

Model averaging for time–varying vector autoregressions

时变向量自回归的模型平均

This paper proposes a novel time-varying model averaging (TVMA) approach to enhancing forecast accuracy for multivariate time series subject to structural changes. The TVMA method averages predictions from a set of time-varying vector autoregressive models using optimal time-varying combination weights selected by minimizing a penalized local criterion. This allows the relative importance of different models to adaptively evolve over time in response to structural shifts. We…

MCA: High-dimensional modal component analysis towards the mode

MCA:面向条件众数的高维众数成分分析

The modal factor model represents a novel statistical framework for dimension reduction in high dimensional panel data analysis. It is specifically designed to capture modal factors which exert a significant influence on the conditional mode of the distribution of the observables. Statistical inference for this model is developed based on a newly proposed modal component analysis, where modal factors and their corresponding loadings are estimated through maximizing a…

Bias Correction in Factor-Augmented Regression Models with Weak Factors

弱因子增强回归模型的偏差校正

In this paper, we study the asymptotic bias of the factor-augmented regression estimator and its reduction, which is augmented by the $r$ factors extracted from a large number of $N$ variables with $T$ observations. In particular, we consider general weak latent factor models with $r$ signal eigenvalues that may diverge at different rates, $N^{α_{k}}$, $0<α_{k}\leq 1$, $k=1,\dots,r$. In the existing literature, the bias has been derived using an approximation for the…

Estimation of Factors Using Higher-Order Multi-Cumulants in Weak Factor Models

利用高阶多元累积量估计弱因子

When factors are weak, covariance-based factor analysis methods tend to exhibit poor performance. To address this issue in the case of non-Gaussian data, we propose a new method called Higher-order multi-cumulant Factor Analysis (HFA). HFA estimates factors and factor loadings via the eigenvalue decomposition of the product of a higher-order multi-cumulant matrix and its transpose. We derive the asymptotic properties of HFA under a weak factor model where non-Gaussianity…

Time-Varying Model Averaging for FAVAR Models with Smooth Structural Changes

平滑结构变化下 FAVAR 模型的时变模型平均

Factor-augmented vector autoregressive (FAVAR) models serve as a powerful tool for forecasting economic and financial variables, particularly in environments with a large number of predictors. In this study, we propose a time-varying model-averaging method for FAVAR (TVMA-FAVAR) that accommodates smooth structural changes. To estimate the optimal time-varying combination weights, we develop a local leave-one-out cross-validation (LLOCV) criterion that is asymptotically…

Factor Model Based Estimation for High Dimensional Reduced-Rank Time Series

基于因子模型的高维降秩时间序列估计

High-dimensional time series are very common in reality. Analyzing each series separately may not be a good strategy, as it may miss some important information and result in a less optimal outcome. Even worse, in some cases, it may not even provide an answer to the question of interest. Reduced-rank model is an important tool for joint analysis of high-dimensional multiple-response time series. In this paper, we develop a new and powerful method for estimating the…

The co-pricing factor zoo

We analyze 18 quadrillion models for the joint pricing of corporate bond and stock returns. Strikingly, we find that equity and nontradable factors alone suffice to explain corporate bond risk premia once their Treasury term structure risk is accounted for, rendering the extensive bond factor literature largely redundant for this purpose. While only a handful of factors, behavioral and nontradable, are likely robust sources of priced risk, the true latent stochastic discount…

THREE-DIMENSIONAL FACTOR MODELS WITH GLOBAL AND LOCAL FACTORS

具有全局与局部因子的三维因子模型

This article considers a three-dimensional latent factor model in the presence of one set of global factors and two sets of local factors. We show that the numbers of global and local factors can be estimated uniformly and consistently. Given the number of global and local factors, we propose a two-step estimation procedure based on principal component analysis (PCA) and establish the asymptotic properties of the PCA estimators. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that they…

Robust Tests of Forecast Accuracy for Factor‐Augmented Regressions With an Application to the Novel EA‐MD‐QD Dataset

因子增强回归预测准确性的稳健检验:新欧元区 EA-MD-QD 数据集应用

ABSTRACT We present four novel tests of equal predictive accuracy and encompassing á Pitarakis (2023, 2025) for factor‐augmented regressions. Factors are estimated using cross‐section averages (CAs) of grouped series and our theoretical findings are empirically relevant: asymptotic normality, robustness to an overspecification of the number of factors, tractability of different degrees of predictor persistence, and invariance to the location of structural breaks in the…

Sparsity-Induced Identification of Factor-Augmented VAR Models

通过稀疏性识别因子扩展 VAR 模型

This paper introduces a regularized factor-augmented vector autoregressive (RFAVAR) model which incorporates sparsity in the factor loadings. Within this framework, the factors can load on a subset of variables, thereby enabling factor identification and enhancing their economic interpretation. The proposed RFAVAR model allows to investigate the effects of structural shocks on economically interpretable factors and on all observed time series included in the model. We prove…
