Continuity of the Distribution Function of the argmax of a Gaussian Process

高斯过程最大值位置分布函数的连续性

Certain extremum estimators have asymptotic distributions that are non‐Gaussian, yet characterizable as the distribution of the arg max of a Gaussian process. This paper presents high‐level sufficient conditions under which such asymptotic distributions admit a continuous distribution function. The plausibility of the sufficient conditions is demonstrated by verifying them in three examples, namely, maximum score estimation, empirical risk minimization, and threshold…

Subgroup Decomposition of the Gini Coefficient: A New Solution to an Old Problem

基尼系数的子群分解:老问题的新解法

We derive a novel decomposition of the Gini coefficient into within‐ and between‐group inequality terms that sum to the aggregate Gini coefficient. This decomposition is derived from a set of axioms that ensure desirable behavior for the within‐ and between‐group inequality terms. The decomposition of the Gini coefficient is unique given our axioms, easy to compute, and can be interpreted geometrically.

Distribution Regression with Sample Selection and UK Wage Decomposition

样本选择下的分布回归与英国工资分解

We develop a distribution regression model under endogenous sample selection. This model is a semiparametric generalization of the Heckman selection model, which accommodates much richer patterns of heterogeneity in the effect of covariates and selection process and allows for departures from Gaussian errors while maintaining the same level of tractability. The model applies to continuous, discrete, and mixed outcomes. We provide identification, estimation, and inference…

Asymptotically-exact selective inference for quantile regression

分位数回归的渐近精确选择后推断

In modern data analysis, it is common to select a model before performing statistical inference. Selective inference tools make adjustments for the model selection process in order to ensure reliable inference post selection. In this paper, we introduce an asymptotic pivot to infer about the effects of selected variables on conditional quantile functions. Utilizing estimators from smoothed quantile regression, our proposed pivot is easy to compute and yields…

MODEL AVERAGING FOR TREATMENT EFFECT ESTIMATION WITH HETEROGENEITY AND HETEROSKEDASTICITY

异质处理效应与异方差下的模型平均估计

The primary focus of this article is to capture heterogeneous treatment effects measured by the conditional average treatment effect. A model averaging estimation scheme is proposed with multiple candidate linear regression models under heteroskedastic errors, and the properties of this scheme are explored analytically. First, it is shown that our proposal is asymptotically optimal in the sense of achieving the lowest possible squared error. Second, the convergence of the…

Finite Sample Inference for the Maximum Score Estimand

最大得分目标参数的有限样本推断

Abstract We provide a finite sample inference method for the structural parameters of Manski's semiparametric binary response model under a conditional median restriction. This is achieved by exploiting distributional properties of observable outcomes conditional on the observed sequence of exogenous variables. Moment inequalities conditional on the size n sequence of exogenous covariates are constructed, and the proposed test statistic is a monotone function of violations…

Weighted-average quantile regression

加权平均分位数回归

In this paper, we introduce the weighted-average quantile regression model. We argue that this model is of interest in many applied settings and develop an estimator for parameters of this model. We show that our estimator is T-consistent and asymptotically normal under weak conditions, where T is the sample size. We demonstrate the usefulness of our estimator in two empirical settings. First, we study the factor structures of the expected shortfalls of the industry…

GMM estimation with Brownian kernels applied to income inequality measurement

布朗核 GMM 估计及其收入不平等测度应用

In GMM estimation, it is well known that if the moment dimension grows with the sample size, the asymptotics of GMM differ from the standard finite dimensional case. The present work examines the asymptotic properties of infinite dimensional GMM estimation when the weight matrix is formed by inverting Brownian motion or Brownian bridge covariance kernels. These kernels arise in econometric work such as minimum Cramér–von Mises distance estimation when testing distributional…

Quantile graphical models: Prediction and conditional independence with applications to systemic risk

分位数图模型:预测、条件独立与系统性风险应用

We propose two types of Quantile Graphical Models: (i) Conditional Independence Quantile Graphical Models (CIQGMs) characterize the conditional independence by evaluating the distributional dependence structure at each quantile index, as such, those can be used for validation of the graph structure in the causal graphical models; (ii) Prediction Quantile Graphical Models (PQGMs) characterize the statistical dependencies through the graphs of the best linear predictors under…

Measuring the effects of segregation in the presence of social spillovers: A nonparametric approach

社会溢出下隔离效应的非参数测量

In this paper we nonparametrically analyze the effects of reallocating individuals across social groups in the presence of social spillovers. Individuals are either 'high' or 'low' types. Own outcomes may vary with the fraction of high types in one's social group. We characterize the average outcome and inequality effects of small increases in segregation by type. We also provide a measure of average spillover strength. We generalize the setup used by Benabou (1996) and…

Estimation of wage inequality in the UK by quantile regression with censored selection

利用删失选择分位数回归估计英国工资不平等

Arellano and Bonhomme (2017) proposed a quantile selection model to study the evolution of wage inequality in the UK, which specifies a binary selection equation and requires an exclusion restriction. In this paper we propose a quantile selection model with a more informative censored selection equation. Following Heckman (1974, 1979), Heckman and Sedlacek (1990), and Blundell et al. (2003), among others, the employment selection equation could be equivalently modeled by an…

Identification of time-varying counterfactual parameters in nonlinear panel models

非线性面板模型中时变反事实参数的识别

We develop a general framework for the identification of counterfactual parameters in a class of nonlinear semiparametric panel models with fixed effects and time effects. Our method applies to models for discrete outcomes (e.g., two-way fixed effects binary choice) or continuous outcomes (e.g., censored regression), with discrete or continuous regressors. Our results do not require parametric assumptions on the error terms or time-homogeneity on the outcome equation. Our…

Loss aversion and the welfare ranking of policy interventions

损失厌恶与政策干预的福利排序

This paper develops theoretical criteria and econometric methods to rank policy interventions in terms of welfare when individuals are loss-averse. Our new criterion for “loss aversion-sensitive dominance” defines a weak partial ordering of the distributions of policy-induced gains and losses. It applies to the class of welfare functions which model individual preferences with non-decreasing and loss-averse attitudes towards changes in outcomes. We also develop new…

Difference‐in‐Difference Causal Forests With an Application to Payroll Tax Incidence in Norway

双重差分因果森林及其在挪威工资税负担归宿中的应用

ABSTRACT This paper introduces the difference‐in‐difference causal forest (DiDCF) method, which extends the causal‐forest technique for estimating heterogeneous treatment effects to settings with dynamic treatment effects. Regular causal forests require independence between treatment assignment and the outcome variable (after conditioning out observables). In contrast, DiDCFs provide consistent estimates with a parallel trend assumption. DiDCFs can be used to create…

AVERAGING ESTIMATORS OF HETEROGENEOUS TREATMENT EFFECTS UNDER ADDITIVE MODELS

加性模型下异质处理效应估计量的模型平均

We consider spline-based additive models for estimation of conditional treatment effects. To handle the uncertainty due to variable selection, we propose a method of model averaging with weights obtained by minimizing a J -fold cross-validation criterion, in which a nearest neighbor matching is used to approximate the unobserved potential outcomes. We show that the proposed method is asymptotically optimal in the sense of achieving the lowest possible squared loss in some…

Multivariate Gaussian cumulative distribution functions as the marginal likelihood of their dual Bayesian probit models

多元高斯累积分布函数与对偶贝叶斯 probit 模型的边际似然

Summary The computation of multivariate Gaussian cumulative distribution functions is a key step in many statistical procedures, often representing a crucial computational bottleneck. Over the past few decades, efficient algorithms have been proposed to address this problem, mainly using Monte Carlo solutions. This work highlights a connection between the multivariate Gaussian cumulative distribution function and the marginal likelihood of a tailored dual Bayesian probit…

Unified Optimal Model Averaging with a General Loss Function based on Cross-Validation

基于交叉验证与一般损失函数的统一最优模型平均

Studying unified model averaging estimation for situations with complicated data structures, we propose a novel model averaging method based on cross-validation ( MACV). MACV unifies a large class of new and existing model averaging estimators and covers a very general class of loss functions. Furthermore, to reduce the computational burden caused by the conventional leave-subject/one-out cross validation, we propose a SEcond-order-Approximated Leave-one/subject-out ( SEAL)…

Causal Inference for Genomic Data with Multiple Heterogeneous Outcomes

多重异质结果下基因组数据的因果推断

With the evolution of single-cell RNA sequencing techniques into a standard approach in genomics, it has become possible to conduct cohort-level causal inferences based on single-cell-level measurements. However, the individual gene expression levels of interest are not directly observable; instead, only repeated proxy measurements from each individual's cells are available, providing a derived outcome to estimate the underlying outcome for each of many genes. In this paper,…

Hypothesis Testing for a Functional Parameter via Self-Normalization

通过自归一化检验函数型参数假设

Testing simple or composite hypothesis on a functional parameter has attracted considerable attention in time series analysis. To accommodate for the unknown temporal dependence, classical nonparametric approaches such as block bootstrapping and subsampling all involve a bandwidth parameter, the choice of which can substantially affect the finite sample performance. The self normalization (SN) method is tuning parameter free when applied to the inference of a…

Dynamic Regression of Longitudinal Trajectory Features

纵向轨迹特征的动态回归

Chronic disease studies often collect data on biological and clinical markers at follow-up visits to monitor disease progression. Viewing such longitudinal measurements governed by latent continuous trajectories, we develop a new dynamic regression framework to investigate the heterogeneity pattern of certain features of the latent individual trajectory that may carry substantive information on disease risk or status. Employing the strategy of multi-level modeling, we…

Estimation and Inference for Nonparametric Expected Shortfall Regression over RKHS

再生核希尔伯特空间上的非参数期望短缺回归估计与推断

Expected shortfall (ES) has emerged as an important metric for characterizing the tail behavior of a random outcome, specifically associated with rarer events that entail severe consequences. In climate science, the threats of flooding and heatwaves loom large, impacting natural environments and human communities. In actuarial studies, a key observation in modeling insurance claim sizes is that features exhibit distinct effects in explaining small and large claims. This…

Multiple-Attribute Lorenz Functions and Gini Indices: A Measure Transportation Approach

多属性洛伦兹函数与基尼指数:测度运输方法

Based on measure transportation ideas and the related concepts of quantile functions and regions, we propose multiple-output generalizations of the traditional univariate concepts of Lorenz and concentration functions, and the related Gini and Kakwani coefficients. These new concepts have a natural interpretation, either in terms of contributions of quantile regions to the expectation of some variable of interest, or in terms of the physical notions of work and energy, which…

Estimation and Inference for Extreme Continuous Treatment Effects

极端连续处理效应的估计与推断

This article studies estimation and inference for the treatment effect in deep tails of the potential outcome distributions corresponding to a continuously valued treatment, namely the extreme continuous treatment effect. We consider two measures for the tail characteristics: the quantile function and the tail mean function defined as the conditional mean beyond a quantile level. Then, for a quantile level close to 1, we define the extreme quantile treatment effect (EQTE)…

Estimating nonparametric conditional frontiers and efficiencies: a new approach

非参数条件前沿与效率估计:一种新方法

Summary In production theory, conditional frontiers and conditional efficiency measures are flexible and appealing tools to investigate the role of environmental variables in the production process. Direct approaches estimate non-parametrically conditional distribution functions requiring smoothing techniques and the use of bandwidths. Traditional methods for selecting bandwidths provide bandwidths of orders that may not be optimal for estimating the boundary of the…
