Dynamic Spatial Panel Models: Networks, Common Shocks, and Sequential Exogeneity

This paper considers a class of generalized methods of moments (GMM) estimators for general dynamic panel models, allowing for weakly exogenous covariates and cross‐sectional dependence due to spatial lags, unspecified common shocks, and time‐varying interactive effects. We significantly expand the scope of the existing literature by allowing for endogenous time‐varying spatial weight matrices without imposing explicit structural assumptions on how the weights are formed. An…

Forecasting With Dynamic Panel Data Models

This paper considers the problem of forecasting a collection of short time series using cross‐sectional information in panel data. We construct point predictors using Tweedie's formula for the posterior mean of heterogeneous coefficients under a correlated random effects distribution. This formula utilizes cross‐sectional information to transform the unit‐specific (quasi) maximum likelihood estimator into an approximation of the posterior mean under a prior distribution that…

Bias reduction in nonlinear and dynamic panels in the presence of cross-section dependence

横截面依赖下非线性与动态面板的偏差修正

Fixed effects estimation of nonlinear dynamic panel models is subject to the incidental parameter issue, leading to a biased asymptotic distribution. While this problem has been studied extensively in the literature, a general analysis allowing for both serial and cross-sectional dependence is missing. In this paper we investigate the large-N,T theory of the profile and integrated likelihood estimators, allowing for dependence across both dimensions. We show that under…

Estimation of linear dynamic panel data models with time‐invariant regressors

含时间不变解释变量的线性动态面板模型估计

Summary We present a sequential approach to estimating a dynamic Hausman–Taylor model. We first estimate the coefficients of the time‐varying regressors and subsequently regress the first‐stage residuals on the time‐invariant regressors. In comparison to estimating all coefficients simultaneously, this two‐stage procedure is more robust against model misspecification, allows for a flexible choice of the first‐stage estimator, and enables simple testing of the overidentifying…

UNIFORM INFERENCE IN HIGH-DIMENSIONAL DYNAMIC PANEL DATA MODELS WITH APPROXIMATELY SPARSE FIXED EFFECTS

近似稀疏固定效应高维动态面板模型的一致有效推断

We establish oracle inequalities for a version of the Lasso in high-dimensional fixed effects dynamic panel data models. The inequalities are valid for the coefficients of the dynamic and exogenous regressors. Separate oracle inequalities are derived for the fixed effects. Next, we show how one can conduct uniformly valid inference on the parameters of the model and construct a uniformly valid estimator of the asymptotic covariance matrix which is robust to conditional…

Democracy Does Cause Growth

民主确实促进增长

We provide evidence that democracy has a positive effect on GDP per capita. Our dynamic panel strategy controls for country fixed effects and the rich dynamics of GDP, which otherwise confound the effect of democracy. To reduce measurement error, we introduce a new indicator of democracy that consolidates previous measures. Our baseline results show that democratizations increase GDP per capita by about 20 percent in the long run. We find similar effects using a propensity…

System Estimation of Panel Data Models Under Long-Range Dependence

长程依赖下的面板数据模型系统估计

A general dynamic panel data model is considered that incorporates individual and interactive fixed effects allowing for contemporaneous correlation in model innovations. The model accommodates general stationary or nonstationary long-range dependence through interactive fixed effects and innovations, removing the necessity to perform a priori unit-root or stationarity testing. Moreover, persistence in innovations and interactive fixed effects allows for cointegration;…

Tail event driven networks of SIFIs

系统重要性金融机构的尾部事件驱动网络

The interdependence, dynamics and riskiness of financial institutions are the key features frequently tackled in financial econometrics. We propose a Tail Event driven Network Quantile Regression (TENQR) model which addresses these three aspects. More precisely, our framework captures the risk propagation and dynamics in terms of a panel quantile autoregression involving network effects that are quantified through a time-varying adjacency matrix. To reflect the risk content…

Banded spatio-temporal autoregressions

带状时空自回归模型

We propose a new class of spatio-temporal models with unknown and banded autoregressive coefficient matrices. The setting represents a sparse structure for high-dimensional spatial panel dynamic models when panel members represent economic (or other type) individuals at many different locations. The structure is practically meaningful when the order of panel members is arranged appropriately. Note that the implied autocovariance matrices are unlikely to be banded, and…

Exclusion Restrictions in Dynamic Binary Choice Panel Data Models: Comment on “Semiparametric Binary Choice Panel Data Models Without Strictly Exogenous Regressors”

动态二元选择面板模型中的排除限制:评《无严格外生回归变量的半参数二元选择面板模型》

In this note we revisit the use of exclusion restrictions in the semiparametric binary choice panel data model introduced in Honore and Lewbel (2002). We show that in a dynamic panel data setting (where one of the pre-determined explanatory variables is the lagged dependent variable), the exclusion restriction in Honore and Lewbel (2002) implicitly re- quires serial independence condition on an observed regressor, that if violated in the data will result in their procedure…

Incidental parameters, initial conditions and sample size in statistical inference for dynamic panel data models

动态面板推断中的附带参数、初始条件与样本规模

We use a quasi-likelihood function approach to clarify the role of initial values and the relative sample size of the cross-section dimension N and the time series dimension T on the asymptotic properties of estimators for dynamic panel data models with the presence of individual-specific effects. We show that a properly specified quasi-likelihood estimator (QMLE) that uses the Mundlak–Chamberlain approach to condition the unobserved effects and initial values on the…

Identifying latent grouped patterns in panel data models with interactive fixed effects

交互固定效应面板模型中潜在分组模式的识别

We consider the estimation of latent grouped patterns in dynamic panel data models with interactive fixed effects. We assume that the individual slope coefficients are homogeneous within a group and heterogeneous across groups but each individual’s group membership is unknown to the researcher. We consider penalized principal component (PPC) estimation by extending the penalized-profile-likelihood-based C-Lasso of Su, Shi, and Phillips (2016) to panel data models with cross…

Half‐panel jackknife fixed‐effects estimation of linear panels with weakly exogenous regressors

含弱外生解释变量的线性面板:半面板 jackknife 固定效应估计

Summary This paper considers estimation and inference in linear panel regression models with lagged dependent variables and/or other weakly exogenous regressors when N (the cross‐section dimension) is large relative to T (the time series dimension). It allows for fixed and time effects (FE‐TE) and derives a general formula for the bias of the FE‐TE estimator which generalizes the well‐known Nickell bias formula derived for the pure autoregressive dynamic panel data models.…

Unified M -estimation of fixed-effects spatial dynamic models with short panels

短面板固定效应空间动态模型的统一 M 估计

It is well known that quasi maximum likelihood (QML) estimation of dynamic panel data (DPD) models with short panels depends on the assumptions on the initial values, and a wrong treatment of them will result in inconsistency and serious bias. The same issues apply to spatial DPD (SDPD) models with short panels. In this paper, a unified M-estimation method is proposed for estimating the fixed-effects SDPD models containing three major types of spatial effects, namely spatial…

The asymptotic properties of GMM and indirect inference under second-order identification

二阶识别下 GMM 与间接推断的渐近性质

This paper presents a limiting distribution theory for GMM and Indirect Inference estimators when local identification conditions fail at first-order but hold at second-order. These limit distributions are shown to be non-standard, but we show that they can be easily simulated, making it possible to perform inference about the parameters in this setting. We illustrate our results in the context of a dynamic panel data model in which the parameter of interest is identified…

The ABC of simulation estimation with auxiliary statistics

基于辅助统计量的模拟估计:ABC与模拟最小距离的联系

The frequentist method of simulated minimum distance (SMD) is widely used in economics to estimate complex models with an intractable likelihood. In other disciplines, a Bayesian approach known as Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) is far more popular. This paper connects these two seemingly related approaches to likelihood-free estimation by means of a Reverse Sampler that uses both optimization and importance weighting to target the posterior distribution. Its hybrid…

Asymptotic inference for dynamic panel estimators of infinite order autoregressive processes

无限阶自回归过程动态面板估计的渐近推断

In this paper we consider the estimation of a dynamic panel autoregressive (AR) process of possibly infinite order in the presence of individual effects. We employ double asymptotics under which both the cross-sectional sample size and the length of time series tend to infinity and utilize the sieve AR approximation with its lag order increasing with the sample size. We establish the consistency and asymptotic normality of the fixed effects estimator and propose a…

Nonparametric heteroskedasticity in persistent panel processes: An application to earnings dynamics

持久性面板过程中的非参数异方差:收入动态应用

This paper considers a dynamic panel model where a latent state variable follows a unit root process with nonparametric heteroskedasticity. We develop constructive nonparametric identification and estimation of the skedastic function. Applying this method to the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics (PSID) in the framework of earnings dynamics, we found that workers with lower pre-recession permanent earnings had higher earnings risk during the three most recent recessions.

DYNAMIC PANEL ANDERSON-HSIAO ESTIMATION WITH ROOTS NEAR UNITY

近单位根动态面板中的 Anderson–Hsiao 估计

Limit theory is developed for the dynamic panel IV estimator in the presence of an autoregressive root near unity. In the unit root case, Anderson–Hsiao lagged variable instruments satisfy orthogonality conditions but are well known to be irrelevant. For a fixed time series sample size ( T ) IV is inconsistent and approaches a shifted Cauchy-distributed random variate as the cross-section sample size n → ∞. But when T → ∞, either for fixed n or as n → ∞, IV is $\sqrt T$ consi…

A generalized focused information criterion for GMM

用于GMM的广义聚焦信息准则

Summary This paper proposes a criterion for simultaneous generalized method of moments model and moment selection: the generalized focused information criterion (GFIC). Rather than attempting to identify the “true” specification, the GFIC chooses from a set of potentially misspecified moment conditions and parameter restrictions to minimize the mean squared error (MSE) of a user‐specified target parameter. The intent of the GFIC is to formalize a situation common in applied…

Identification and estimation of semi‐parametric censored dynamic panel data models of short time periods

短期删失动态面板模型的半参数识别与估计

In this paper, we present a semi‐parametric identification and estimation method for censored dynamic panel data models of short time periods and their average partial effects with only two periods of data. The proposed method transforms the semi‐parametric specification of censored dynamic panel data models into a parametric family of distribution functions of observables without specifying the distribution of the initial condition. Then the censored dynamic panel data…

Adaptive Elastic Net GMM Estimation With Many Invalid Moment Conditions: Simultaneous Model and Moment Selection

多无效矩条件下的自适应弹性网GMM估计:模型与矩条件联合选择

This article develops the adaptive elastic net generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator in large-dimensional models with potentially (locally) invalid moment conditions, where both the number of structural parameters and the number of moment conditions may increase with the sample size. The basic idea is to conduct the standard GMM estimation combined with two penalty terms: the adaptively weighted lasso shrinkage and the quadratic regularization. It is a one-step…

Many IVs estimation of dynamic panel regression models with measurement error

含测量误差动态面板回归的多工具变量估计

In this paper, we investigate a dynamic linear panel regression model with measurement error. We consider the panel data estimation whose time dimension (T) is not small and comparable to the cross sectional dimension (N). First, we show that the 2SLS estimator suffers from the bias problem due to many instrumental variables. Using the alternative asymptotics where T3N goes to a constant as N,T→∞, we characterize its asymptotic bias due to many IVs. As a bias reduction…
