Bootstrap methods are not inherently conditional, but they can be made so by appropriate stratification of the simulated samples which bootstrap produces. We show how stratification can work in a bootstrap analysis of mean-shift in Nile river flow data. The results are compared with both parametric and semiparametric likelihood analyses. The paper ends with some general remarks on conditional bootstraps.

In observational studies, treatments are not randomly assigned to experimental units, so that randomization tests and their associated interval estimates are not generally applicable. In an effort to compensate for the lack of randomization, treated and control units are often matched on the basis of observed covariates; however, the possibility remains of bias due to residual imbalances in unobserved covariates. A general though simple method is proposed for displaying the…
This article compares two methods of deriving standard errors for elasticities in a linear expenditure demand system with first-order autoregressive errors. The first is the ordinary Taylor series method and the second is Efron's bootstrap. In an example problem, these two methods yielded similar values for the standard errors, with the exception of the income elasticity standard errors, for which the asymptotic standard errors were apparently too large by a factor of two.

The paper is incorrect in stating that permutation tests based on the modified statistics described in § 7 are valid when treatments are subject to unequal consoring. Wei (1980) and Wei & Pee (1985) have developed distribution-free methods for analysing right-censored paired data that can be applied when censoring is unequal.
We describe a method for constructing likelihood-based confidence regions for a vector parameter, using the bootstrap and nonparametric density estimation. The technique is illustrated by application to a numerical example, and its theoretical properties are elucidated. It is argued that likelihood-based regions should not be approximated by ellipses, if we are to have any hope of capturing first-order departures from normality. Bootstrap algorithms for constructing…
Approximate confidence sets for a parameter θ may be obtained by referring a function of θ and of the sample to an estimated quantile of that function's sampling distribution. We call this function the root of the confidence set. Either asymptotic theory or bootstrap methods can be used to estimate the desired quantile. When the root is not a pivot, in the sense of classical statistics, the actual level of the approximate confidence set may differ substantially from the…

The bootstrap and smoothed bootstrap are considered as alternative methods of estimating properties of unknown distributions such as the sampling error of parameter estimates. Criteria are developed for determining whether it is advantageous to use the smoothed bootstrap rather than the standard bootstrap. Key steps in the argument leading to these criteria include the study of the estimation of linear functionals of distributions and the approximation of general functionals…

Liang (1985) proposed an alternative to the Mantel-Haenszel procedure for testing the significance of an estimated common odds ratio when the binomial assumption for the observed cell frequencies is relaxed. It is shown that this procedure is a form of Fisher's one-sample permutation test.

We make two points about the number, $B$ of bootstrap simulations needed to construct a percentile-$t$ confidence interval based on an $n$ sample from a continuous distribution: (i) The bootstrap's reduction of error of coverage probability, from $O(n^{-1/2})$ to $O(n^{-1})$, is available uniformly in $B$, provided nominal coverage probability is a multiple of $(B + 1)^{-1}$. In fact, this improvement is available even if the number of simulations is held fixed as $n$ increas…
We derive an explicit formula for the first term in an unconditional Edgeworth-type expansion of coverage probability for the nonparametric bootstrap technique applied to a very broad class of "Studentized" statistics. The class includes sample mean, $k$-sample mean, sample correlation coefficient, maximum likelihood estimators expressible as functions of vector means, etc. We suggest that the bootstrap is really an empiric one-term Edgeworth inversion, with the bootstrap…
Motivated by a representation for the least squares estimator, we propose a class of weighted jackknife variance estimators for the least squares estimator by deleting any fixed number of observations at a time. They are unbiased for homoscedastic errors and a special case, the delete-one jackknife, is almost unbiased for heteroscedastic errors. The method is extended to cover nonlinear parameters, regression $M$-estimators, nonlinear regression and generalized linear…
The confidence sets for a $q$-dimensional distribution studied in this paper have several attractive features: affine invariance, correct asymptotic level whatever the actual distribution may be, numerical feasibility, and a local asymptotic minimax optimality property. When dimension $q$ equals one, the confidence sets reduce to the usual Kolmogorov-Smirnov confidence bands, except that critical values are determined by bootstrapping.
A regression model is fitted to an observed set of data. How accurate is the model for predicting future observations? The apparent error rate tends to underestimate the true error rate because the data have been used twice, both to fit the model and to check its accuracy. We provide simple estimates for the downward bias of the apparent error rate. The theory applies to general exponential family linear models and general measures of prediction error. Special attention is…

Bayesian analysis is subject to the same kinds of misspeciflcation problems which motivate the robustness and nonparametric literature. We present a method of incorporating prior information which performs well without direct knowledge of the error distribution. This is accomplished by replacing the likelihood in Bayes's formula by a bootstrap estimate of the sampling density of a robust estimator. The flexibility of the method is illustrated by examples, and its performance…
Several existing methods for the choice of the ridge parameter are reviewed, and a bootstrap method is proposed. The bootstrap provides independent measures of prediction errors based on multiple predictions along with an estimate of the standard error of prediction. The bootstrap and selected competitors are compared through Monte Carlo simulations for various degrees of design matrix collinearity and varying levels of signal-to-noise ratio. The procedure is also…
In the course of conducting a clinical trial to compare $K (\geq 2)$ treatments, it is often desirable to balance the trial with respect to the assignments of patients to treatments. On the other hand, some form of randomization of treatment assignments is essential for reducing experimental bias.
