Noncausal AR processes driven by causal GARCH volatility

由因果 GARCH 波动驱动的非因果自回归过程

This paper studies the introduction of causal conditional heteroskedasticity in noncausal autoregressive (AR) models. We demonstrate that, in this framework, large shocks to the innovation process driving the GARCH error term of a noncausal AR model result in heightened volatility immediately before and after a bubble crash. The non-coincidence of the σ-fields generated by past observations and past values of the GARCH process makes statistical inference nonstandard. In…

The Transmission of Macroprudential Policy in the Tails: Evidence From a Narrative Approach

宏观审慎政策的尾部传导:叙事识别证据

ABSTRACT We estimate the causal effects of macroprudential policies on the entire distribution of GDP growth for advanced European economies using a narrative‐identification strategy in a quantile‐regression framework. While macroprudential policy has near‐zero effects on the center of the GDP‐growth distribution, tighter policy brings benefits by reducing the variance of future growth, significantly boosting the left tail while simultaneously reducing the right. Assessing a…

Quantile graphical models: Prediction and conditional independence with applications to systemic risk

分位数图模型:预测、条件独立与系统性风险应用

We propose two types of Quantile Graphical Models: (i) Conditional Independence Quantile Graphical Models (CIQGMs) characterize the conditional independence by evaluating the distributional dependence structure at each quantile index, as such, those can be used for validation of the graph structure in the causal graphical models; (ii) Prediction Quantile Graphical Models (PQGMs) characterize the statistical dependencies through the graphs of the best linear predictors under…

Permutation‐based tests for discontinuities in event studies

事件研究中检测不连续性的置换检验

We propose using a permutation test to detect discontinuities in an underlying economic model at a known cutoff point. Relative to the existing literature, we show that this test is well suited for event studies based on time‐series data. The test statistic measures the distance between the empirical distribution functions of observed data in two local subsamples on the two sides of the cutoff. Critical values are computed via a standard permutation algorithm. Under a…

Bayesian Estimation and Comparison of Conditional Moment Models

条件矩模型的贝叶斯估计与比较

Abstract We consider the Bayesian analysis of models in which the unknown distribution of the outcomes is specified up to a set of conditional moment restrictions. The non-parametric exponentially tilted empirical likelihood function is constructed to satisfy a sequence of unconditional moments based on an increasing (in sample size) vector of approximating functions (such as tensor splines based on the splines of each conditioning variable). For any given sample size,…

Information theoretic approach to high‐dimensional multiplicative models: Stochastic discount factor and treatment effect

高维乘法模型的信息论方法:随机贴现因子与处理效应

This paper is concerned with estimation of functionals of a latent weight function that satisfies possibly high‐dimensional multiplicative moment conditions. Main examples are functionals of stochastic discount factors in asset pricing, missing data problems, and treatment effects. We propose to estimate the latent weight function by an information theoretic approach combined with the ℓ 1 ‐penalization technique to deal with high‐dimensional moment conditions under sparsity.…

Measuring Granger Causality in Quantiles

分位数格兰杰因果性的度量

We consider measures of Granger causality in quantiles, which detect and quantify both linear and nonlinear causal effects between random variables. The measures are based on nonparametric quantile regressions and defined as logarithmic functions of restricted and unrestricted expectations of quantile check loss functions. They can consistently be estimated by replacing the unknown expectations of check loss functions by their nonparametric kernel estimates. We derive a…

Sieve estimation of option-implied state price density

期权隐含状态价格密度的筛估计

This paper proposes a nonparametric estimator for the state price density implied by a single cross-section of European options with different strikes and the same maturity. The proposed estimator has two distinctive features. First, it extracts information from both call and put options, as opposed to only call options. Second, it does not require estimating any second-order derivative; instead, it solves a constrained and penalized linear regression. The asymptotic…

Causal discovery in heavy-tailed models

重尾模型中的因果发现

Causal questions are omnipresent in many scientific problems. While much progress has been made in the analysis of causal relationships between random variables, these methods are not well suited if the causal mechanisms only manifest themselves in extremes. This work aims to connect the two fields of causal inference and extreme value theory. We define the causal tail coefficient that captures asymmetries in the extremal dependence of two random variables. In the population…

MIXED CAUSAL-NONCAUSAL AR PROCESSES AND THE MODELLING OF EXPLOSIVE BUBBLES

混合因果—非因果自回归过程与爆炸性泡沫建模

Noncausal autoregressive models with heavy-tailed errors generate locally explosive processes and, therefore, provide a convenient framework for modelling bubbles in economic and financial time series. We investigate the probability properties of mixed causal-noncausal autoregressive processes, assuming the errors follow a stable non-Gaussian distribution. Extending the study of the noncausal AR(1) model by Gouriéroux and Zakoian (2017), we show that the conditional…

Bayesian nonparametric sparse VAR models

贝叶斯非参数稀疏向量自回归模型

High dimensional vector autoregressive (VAR) models require a large number of parameters to be estimated and may suffer of inferential problems. We propose a new Bayesian nonparametric (BNP) Lasso prior (BNP-Lasso) for high-dimensional VAR models that can improve estimation efficiency and prediction accuracy. Our hierarchical prior overcomes overparametrization and overfitting issues by clustering the VAR coefficients into groups and by shrinking the coefficients of each…

Measuring Nonlinear Granger Causality in Mean

均值中非线性Granger因果性的度量

We propose model-free measures for Granger causality in mean between random variables. Unlike the existing measures, ours are able to detect and quantify nonlinear causal effects. The new measures are based on nonparametric regressions and defined as logarithmic functions of restricted and unrestricted mean square forecast errors. They are easily and consistently estimated by replacing the unknown mean square forecast errors by their nonparametric kernel estimates. We derive…

Realized stochastic volatility with general asymmetry and long memory

具有一般非对称性与长记忆的已实现随机波动率模型

The paper develops a novel realized stochastic volatility model of asset returns and realized volatility that incorporates general asymmetry and long memory (hereafter the RSV-GALM model). The contribution of the paper ties in with Robert Basmann’s seminal work in terms of the estimation of highly non-linear model specifications (Basmann, 1988), especially for specifying causal effects from returns to future volatility. This paper discusses asymptotic results of a Whittle…

Sample Selection and Treatment Effect Estimation of Lender of Last Resort Policies

This article develops a framework for estimating multivariate treatment effect models in the presence of sample selection. The methodology deals with several important issues prevalent in policy and program evaluation, including application and approval stages, nonrandom treatment assignment, endogeneity, and discrete outcomes. This article presents a computationally efficient estimation algorithm and techniques for model comparison and treatment effects. The framework is…

Asymptotic normality of the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator for multidimensional causal processes

多维因果时间过程准极大似然估计量的渐近正态性

Strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the quasi-maximum likelihood estimator are given for a general class of multidimensional causal processes. For particular cases already studied in the literature [for instance univariate or multivariate ARCH(∞) processes], the assumptions required for establishing these results are often weaker than existing conditions. The QMLE asymptotic behavior is also given for numerous new examples of univariate or multivariate processes…

The Interactive and Causal Relationships Involving Precious Metal Price Movements An Analysis of the Gold and Silver Markets

To explain the interactive and causal relationships between gold and silver price movements, time series procedures are used to identify reduced-form parameters corresponding to a general arbitrage model. Enveloped in a framework of expectations about capital gains, current price changes are conjectured to be functions of lagged and present values of the substitute precious metal prices and the interest rate, plus lagged values of its own price. To determine the appropriate…
