Nonlinearity in Dynamic Causal Effects: Making the Bad into the Good, and the Good into the Great?

This article was prepared as a comment on “Dynamic Causal Effects in a Nonlinear World: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” by Michal Kolesár and Mikkel Plagborg-Møller. We make three comments, including a novel contribution to the literature, showing how a reasonable economic interpretation can potentially be restored for average-effect estimators with negative weights.

ℓ2 inference for change points in high-dimensional time series via a Two-Way MOSUM

We propose an inference method for detecting multiple change points in high-dimensional time series, targeting dense or spatially clustered signals. Our method aggregates moving sum (MOSUM) statistics cross-sectionally by an ℓ2-norm and maximizes them over time. We further introduce a novel Two-Way MOSUM, which utilizes spatial-temporal moving regions to search for breaks, with the added advantage of enhancing testing power when breaks occur in only a few groups. The…

Testing for parameter change epochs in GARCH time series

Summary We develop a uniform test for detecting and dating the integrated or mildly explosive behaviour of a strictly stationary generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) process. Namely, we test the null hypothesis of a globally stable GARCH process with constant parameters against the alternative that there is an ‘abnormal’ period with changed parameter values. During this period, the parameter-value change may lead to an integrated or mildly…

Inference of Breakpoints in High-dimensional Time Series

For multiple change-points detection of high-dimensional time series, we provide asymptotic theory concerning the consistency and the asymptotic distribution of the breakpoint statistics and estimated break sizes. The theory backs up a simple two-step procedure for detecting and estimating multiple change-points. The proposed two-step procedure involves the maximum of a MOSUM (moving sum) type statistics in the first step and a CUSUM (cumulative sum) refinement step on an…

Dynamic Semiparametric Factor Model With Structural Breaks

For the change-point analysis of a high-dimensional time series, we consider a semiparametric model with dynamic structural break factors. With our model, the observations are described by a few low-dimensional factors with time-invariant loading functions of the covariates. Regarding the structural break, the factors are assumed to be nonstationary and follow a vector autoregression process with a change in the parameter values. In addition, to account for the known spatial…

LASSO-driven inference in time and space

We consider the estimation and inference in a system of high-dimensional regression equations allowing for temporal and cross-sectional dependency in covariates and error processes, covering rather general forms of weak temporal dependence. A sequence of regressions with many regressors using LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) is applied for variable selection purpose, and an overall penalty level is carefully chosen by a block multiplier bootstrap…

HIDDEN MARKOV STRUCTURES FOR DYNAMIC COPULAE

Understanding the time series dynamics of a multi-dimensional dependency structure is a challenging task. Multivariate covariance driven Gaussian or mixed normal time varying models have only a limited ability to capture important features of the data such as heavy tails, asymmetry, and nonlinear dependencies. The present paper tackles this problem by proposing and analyzing a hidden Markov model (HMM) for hierarchical Archimedean copulae (HAC). The HAC constitute a wide…
