CENTRAL LIMIT THEORY FOR COMBINED CROSS SECTION AND TIME SERIES WITH AN APPLICATION TO AGGREGATE PRODUCTIVITY SHOCKS

Combining cross-sectional and time-series data is a long and well-established practice in empirical economics. We develop a central limit theory that explicitly accounts for possible dependence between the two datasets. We focus on common factors as the mechanism behind this dependence. Using our central limit theorem (CLT), we establish the asymptotic properties of parameter estimates of a general class of models based on a combination of cross-sectional and time-series…

Efficient bias correction for cross‐section and panel data

Bias correction can often improve the finite sample performance of estimators. We show that the choice of bias correction method has no effect on the higher‐order variance of semiparametrically efficient parametric estimators, so long as the estimate of the bias is asymptotically linear. It is also shown that bootstrap, jackknife, and analytical bias estimates are asymptotically linear for estimators with higher‐order expansions of a standard form. In particular, we find…

JOINT TIME-SERIES AND CROSS-SECTION LIMIT THEORY UNDER MIXINGALE ASSUMPTIONS

In this paper, we complement joint time-series and cross-section convergence results derived in a companion paper Hahn, Kuersteiner, and Mazzocco (2016, Central Limit Theory for Combined Cross-Section and Time Series) by allowing for serial correlation in the time-series sample. The implications of our analysis are limiting distributions that have a well-known form of long-run variances for the time-series limit. We obtain these results at the cost of imposing strict…

Estimation with Aggregate Shocks

Abstract Aggregate shocks affect most households’ and firms’ decisions. Using three stylized models, we show that inference based on cross-sectional data alone generally fails to correctly account for decision making of rational agents facing aggregate uncertainty. We propose an econometric framework that overcomes these problems by explicitly parameterizing the agents’ decision problem relative to aggregate shocks. Our framework and examples illustrate that the…

BIAS REDUCTION FOR DYNAMIC NONLINEAR PANEL MODELS WITH FIXED EFFECTS

The fixed effects estimator of panel models can be severely biased because of well-known incidental parameter problems. It is shown that this bias can be reduced in nonlinear dynamic panel models. We consider asymptotics where n and T grow at the same rate as an approximation that facilitates comparison of bias properties. Under these asymptotics, the bias-corrected estimators we propose are centered at the truth, whereas fixed effects estimators are not. We discuss several…

Difference in difference meets generalized least squares: Higher order properties of hypotheses tests

We investigate the estimation and inference in difference in difference econometric models used in the analysis of treatment effects. When the innovations in such models display serial correlation, commonly used ordinary least squares (OLS) procedures are inefficient and may lead to tests with incorrect size. Implementation of feasible generalized least squares (FGLS) procedures is often hindered by too few observations in the cross-section to allow for unrestricted…

Estimation with weak instruments: Accuracy of higher‐order bias and MSE approximations

In this paper, we consider parameter estimation in a linear simultaneous equations model. It is well known that two-stage least squares (2SLS) estimators may perform poorly when the instruments are weak. In this case 2SLS tends to suffer from the substantial small sample biases. It is also known that LIML and Nagar-type estimators are less biased than 2SLS but suffer from large small sample variability. We construct a bias-corrected version of 2SLS based on the Jackknife…
