The comovement of voter preferences: Insights from U.S. presidential election prediction markets beyond polls

选民偏好的共同变动:超越民调的美国总统选举预测市场信息

We propose a novel time-series econometric framework to forecast U.S. Presidential election outcomes in real time by combining polling data, economic fundamentals, and political prediction market prices. Our model estimates the joint dynamics of voter preferences across states. Applying our approach to the 2024 Presidential Election, we find a two-factor structure driving the vast majority of the variation in voter preferences. We identify electorally similar state clusters…

News-Driven Uncertainty Fluctuations

新闻驱动的不确定性波动

We investigate the channels through which news influences the subjective beliefs of economic agents, with a particular focus on their subjective uncertainty. The main insight of the article is that news that is more at odds with agents’ prior beliefs generates an increase in uncertainty; news that is more consistent with their prior beliefs generates a decrease in uncertainty. We illustrate this insight theoretically and then estimate the model empirically using data on U.S.…

Identifying Long-Run Risks: A Bayesian Mixed-Frequency Approach

长期风险识别:贝叶斯混频方法

We document that consumption growth rates are far from i.i.d. and have a highly persistent component. First, we estimate univariate and multivariate models of cash‐flow (consumption, output, dividends) growth that feature measurement errors, time‐varying volatilities, and mixed‐frequency observations. Monthly consumption data are important for identifying the stochastic volatility process; yet the data are contaminated, which makes the inclusion of measurement errors…

Improving G D P measurement: A measurement-error perspective

从测量误差视角改进 GDP 测度

We provide a new measure of historical U.S. GDP growth, obtained by applying optimal signal-extraction techniques to the noisy expenditure-side and income-side GDP estimates. The quarter-by-quarter values of our new measure often differ noticeably from those of the traditional measures. Its dynamic properties differ as well, indicating that the persistence of aggregate output dynamics is stronger than previously thought.

Real-Time Forecasting With a Mixed-Frequency VAR

使用混频 VAR 进行实时预测

This article develops a vector autoregression (VAR) for time series which are observed at mixed frequencies—quarterly and monthly. The model is cast in state-space form and estimated with Bayesian methods under a Minnesota-style prior. We show how to evaluate the marginal data density to implement a data-driven hyperparameter selection. Using a real-time dataset, we evaluate forecasts from the mixed-frequency VAR and compare them to standard quarterly frequency VAR and to…
