Calibrating an Ice Sheet Model Using High-Dimensional Binary Spatial Data

利用高维二元空间数据校准冰盖模型

Rapid retreat of ice in the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica may cause drastic sea level rise, posing significant risks to populations in low-lying coastal regions. Calibration of computer models representing the behavior of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is key for informative projections of future sea level rise. However, both the relevant observations and the model output are high-dimensional binary spatial data; existing computer model calibration methods are unable…

Estimation in functional regression for general exponential families

一般指数族函数型回归的估计

This paper studies a class of exponential family models whose canonical parameters are specified as linear functionals of an unknown infinite-dimensional slope function. The optimal minimax rates of convergence for slope function estimation are established. The estimators that achieve the optimal rates are constructed by constrained maximum likelihood estimation with parameters whose dimension grows with sample size. A change-of-measure argument, inspired by Le Cam’s theory…

Asymptotics for Least Absolute Deviation Regression Estimators

最小绝对偏差回归估计量的渐近理论

The LAD estimator of the vector parameter in a linear regression is defined by minimizing the sum of the absolute values of the residuals. This paper provides a direct proof of asymptotic normality for the LAD estimator. The main theorem assumes deterministic carriers. The extension to random carriers includes the case of autoregressions whose error terms have finite second moments. For a first-order autoregression with Cauchy errors the LAD estimator is shown to converge at…

Cube Root Asymptotics

立方根渐近理论

We establish a new functional central limit theorem for empirical processes indexed by classes of functions. In a neighborhood of a fixed parameter point, an $n^{-1/3}$ rescaling of the parameter is compensated for by an $n^{2/3}$ rescaling of the empirical measure, resulting in a limiting Gaussian process. By means of a modified continuous mapping theorem for the location of the maximizing value, we deduce limit theorems for several statistics defined by maximization or…

Simulation and the Asymptotics of Optimization Estimators

模拟与优化估计量的渐近理论

A general central limit theorem is proved for estimators defined by minimization of the length of a vector-valued, random criterion function. No smoothness assumptions are imposed on the criterion function in order that the results might apply to a broad class of simulation estimators. Complete analyses of two simulation estimators, one introduced by A. Pakes (1986) and the other by D. McFadden (1989), illustrate the application of the general theorems. These examples…

$U$-Processes: Rates of Convergence

U 过程的收敛速率

This paper introduces a new stochastic process, a collection of $U$-statistics indexed by a family of symmetric kernels. Conditions are found for the uniform almost-sure convergence of a sequence of such processes. Rates of convergence are obtained. An application to cross-validation in density estimation is given. The proofs adapt methods from the theory of empirical processes.

New Ways to Prove Central Limit Theorems

证明中心极限定理的新方法

This paper describes some techniques for proving asymptotic normality of statistics defined by maximization of random criterion function. The techniques are based on a combination of recent results from the theory of empirical processes and a method of Huber for the study of maximum likelihood estimators under nonstandard conditions.
